A new rifle, savage?

I've head a lot about the savage bolt action rifles, and how accurate they are. I've been looking at the savage axis line. Any info on them? Would you recommend one to a close friend? I'm liking for a good shooting gun, that's preferably under $500. Thanks!

Get the Stevens 200 and you will have twice the rifle for less than $250.00. I have 2 Stevens 200 and both are more accurate than the Remington 700. I recently sold off 9 milsurps and been on a buying spree and the Stevens can't be beat for the money or accuracy. You can also do more custom work yourself with the Savage/Stevens line of rifles. (the Edge is the bottom ot the line model)

I have an Axis/Edge in 223. Very accurate, and under $400 with the scope. BUT, the drawback is that this entry level line of rifles do NOT incorporate Savage's excellent Accutrigger. I have another Savage 308 LE sniper model that does have the Accutrigger.

The Axis trigger is not horrid. It is really not bad; but it is not the featherweight Accutrigger (and its Glock-like lever safety on the trigger).

Do your self a favor and dry fire a Savage with the Accutrigger and then the Axis. It is worth $150 more to get the superb trigger to match the accuracy of Savage rifles.

Savage 11 and 111 series can be found with and without the Accutrigger.

I agree with Edward Horton. The savage/stevens 200 is a superb rifle, especially for the money I have one chambered in .270 win, and couldn't be happier. Sub minute of angle groups with factory ammo and half minute groups with handloads. It is basically a savage 110 without the accutrigger, which I admit is nice. But for $90-100 you can, if you wish purchase a much lighter and smoother trigger from either Timney or Rifle Basix.

More accurate than we are!!! I have three, two with the Accurtrigger and one pre-Accurtrigger. While I LOVE the Accurtrigger the ones without are no slouches either. This is from last Sunday with a standard 110 trigger in 270.

I was working on load development. That is a five shot group.

^ That's more than good enough to shoot accurately. Varmints. target, or long range. I'd be very happy with that performance.

I also have tha Edge in .223. I say Edge because I purchased it pre name change & I believe they change the forearm with the name. Same rifle non the less! I can't list one negative with the rifle! I have seen & shot at 5 coyotes since I purchased it in February. It dropped each one from a 55yrd chest shot out to a 220 yrd head shot! YES, I would recommend it to a friend! Best of luck! Let us know what you decide!

I had the Edge also.Traded it in just because i wanted to shoot farther distances got a Savage FVSS. While i had that thing i can tell you for sure it will out shoot rifle 5 times its cost. Trigger was not that bad, took some getting used to but once you had it down it was the cats meow. Never shot a stevens so i can't coment on them but after 3 savages now,i dont care about stevens it will be Savage from here out. I say buy it and put the extra money into ammo because you are going to love shooting this thing.

Ok, I will definitely look into the Stevens 200. I will look into the accutrigger, but unless it's a jaw dropping trigger, I'll probably just go to the 200. Thanks for the help!! Now I just have to decide on an optic :)

I think you've made a good decison. The ONLY thing I've ever heard negative about the 200 (other than its looks) is that Savage goofed badly when they made the 7mm-08 chambering in it. They chose to give it a 1/11 twist which limits its ability to use heavier bullets.

For a hunting rifle, any good 3X9 will do. Look at Leupold, Nikon, Viper, Weaver, Burris, Whatever suits you best, both optically and in your pocketbook.

I was looking for a scope to complete a project (.308 Savage hunting rifle) and stumbled across a new line put out by Weaver. They call them the Buck Commander line. I'm not necessarily impressed with the Buck Commander name, but I got the 2.5X10 and I'm really impressed with that little scope. The glass is bright and clear and the turrets are set up in a really user-friendly manner.

I have an older(pre Accutrigger) Weather Warrior in 243 that has an excellent trigger, just a little creep, but light. Not like the older Model 700's or Model 70's, but it's very accurate. Never tried factory loads, however. I have a 4 power Nikon scope on it, not hard to shoot 1" groups. I'm sure I could do a lot better with a more powerful scope, but I'm not really sold on the variables. I'll be looking for a fixed 10 or 12 some day, but there isn't much demand for them. Old guy, raised on open sights!

I'd recommend spending a little more and getting the Accutrigger also. Is the extra couple hundred dollars gonna matter years from now?

Jim243, what loading is that five round group? Specifically, I have the same rifle basically, and I'm looking for a great shooting load for the 130 grain bullet.:)
