I watched Swamp People on the History Channel last night. This is one of the coollest hunting shows I've ever seen. It follows a bunch of cajuns during the one month alligator hunting season in Louisiana. To hunt gators, you put a hook on a line and bait it with rotten chicken. The gator eats the chicken and then is stuck on the line. You drag the line to your boat (by hand), and when the gator surfaces, you shoot him in the head - so everyone on this show is packing a firearm. It seemed like a lot of these guys were using .22 caliber rimfire guns. I'm a nervous city boy and would at least need a .357 Ruger Blackhawk, but who am I to judge? I never go hunting and these guys have been hunting gators their whole lives. This show is strange compared to other hunting shows in that, on the other shows there is a certain reverence to the equipment (guns, ammo, scopes, etc.) being used. On Swamp People, there is no reverence towards the guns, etc. Maybe it is the lack of firearm industry sponsorship, but the guns are shown only as tools - kind of like a boat anchor (in fact it looks like most of these guys store their guns with their boat anchors). Anyway, it's a pretty cool show.
