I remember having to double time in the poring rain back from field training with one of those over my head, at Fort Cambell.
A hell of alot better rifle than the M16.

I was in elementary school in 1969 and the concert didn't mean anything to me at the time. I remember a neighbor man who went to see the movie Woodstock when it came out thinking from the name that it was a western. :D He was sorely disappointed. "Bunch of loud noise and kids runnin' around with their clothes off..."

my dad would like to see that pic.he has yet to stop telling me about the times carrying his rifel around.he even broke his fireing it in full auto one time.I think he said 4-5 mags in a row did it in.not sure he needs to tell the story not me.:D

great pic and thanks it reminds me of our men who fought and fighting now.like my son.he is going back pretty soon.yep we hate it but who can stop him from going.he's the one who signed his name not me.:(

I was born in '67, so obviously, I missed out on SE Asia. However, I hope the OP and the moderators will pardon me as I send a sincere "Thank you" to any and all of our veterans. God bless you and your families! Oh yeah, and an M1A is still on my "to get" list......;)

Its going to be interesting for me 30 years from now, as I imagine the US military would have adopted a new rifle then the M16/M4. I got the carry the A2 in bootcamp, A4 in SOI, and M4 with my unit. I dont know what they'll be carrying, maybe something along the lines of a bullpup or something, but Im sure I'll have that feeling of "Ahhh just give me my damn '16 and well be good! Aint nothing these new fangled fancy things that an M4 can't do!" Wish I had the experience so I could say that about the M14.

Not nostalgic for the M14

Same as Kraig, I qualified with the M14 in basic training, carried it through AIT, plus 6 months at Ft Benning. What a relief to have been issued an M16 when arriving Vietnam. Light, much more ammo to carry, and, at least in my brigade, no jamming or other reliability problems. A lighter weapon and ammunition load meant an infantryman could carry more grenades, water, Claymores, C rations, C4, etc.

Other than early teething problems with the M16, no infantryman humping soggy rice paddies and jungle preferred carrying an M14 instead of an M16. A good deal of nostalgia for the M14 seems to come from those who did not have to hump through those terrains.

Nice rifle

I want to say thanks to all you guys who served in Vietnam. I was born in '57 so I missed that one, but my older brother John was in Cam Ranh Bay in '70. Only there a few months before he caught a few pounds of steel shrapnel during an attack.

He came home, but was never the same. Haunted and addicted to narcotics, he died 17 years ago.

The lack of support we, as a society, give our veterans after they come home is a shame and continues to this day. So, I go out of my way to thank every one I meet for their service.

Understand well your late brother's position and your empathy. Thanks.

PS: And I still prefer the M16 over the M14.

I loved to carry the M-14, and then

I was assigned to the 1st Cav (Air Mobile) Division, which was equipped with the "Mattel Toy", little black plastic 22 mag.

The only ammo I could scrounge from the Cav guys was linked belts of M-60 machinegun stuff. Then I had to break it out of the links and feed it into my 10 round mags.

So, I begged my chain of command to get me a Mattel Toy. It took about a month to get one. The breakfast chopper flew into my hill top OP, tossed me a black plastic 22 mag, and I tossed them my M-14.:D

That night, a 600 pound kitty cat (tiger:eek:) came prowling into the perimeter, and I was suddenly very nostalgic about having my M-14 back!:(

I snuggled up close to the dude with the Ma Duece the rest of the night.;)

Ah, sweet memories.:) 1965/66.
