A little fun on the range

A bunch of us from the club did a little trap shooting on Saturday. It was a nice day - the weather is cooling down a little, so it's really nice to be outside.

Now, I'm not much of a shotgun shooter and I only have three guns - an old pair of Winchester 1897s and an even older Janssen side by side. But I'm always up for shooting, so I drug one of the '97s and the SxS out to the range.

Now, what I know and they didn't is that the old Janssen shotgun is a black powder gun. And, yep, I know all about the laminated steel barrels, so no need to go there. So when it was my turn to go, I plopped just one paper (!) shell in the breech, locked it shut, shouldered the shotgun and yelled, "PULL!"

Oh, the humanity.

Nobody but me expected the humongous cloud of stinky, sulfurous smoke that boomed out of the muzzle. And it took a while for everyone to stop laughing. Oh, I completely missed the clay, but for a minute there, I thought that there was going to be a heart attack or two...

I did just fine with the '97.

That's just a marvelous story. I can picture it in my mind's eye and it leaves me smiling.:D I needed that. Thanks.

next time, load them both and call for doubles!

I've seen many folks bring out old Damascus barrel guns and shoot the low-pressure loads from Polywad or RST....really cool

That "humongous cloud of stinky, sulfurous smoke" is what makes black powder doubles an interesting challenge. ;)

Heheh, maybe on a breezy day...I'm not sure if I'd be able to see the second bird!

If you can't wait for the wind at your back, have you tried the shoot-n-squat method of shooting doubles with black powder? If you can't see through the smoke, try looking under it. :D

There was a prankster that used to load up a black powder shell and drop it into someones shell bag at the old trap-n-skeet range. Always good for a laugh.
