A letter from my Congress-critter

Thank you for contacting me regarding gun control legislation. I apologize for the
delay in responding.

I believe that the Second Amendment to the Constitution does not in any case guarantee a
right that is absolute, but one that can be limited by reasonable requirements. I support federal
controls on firearms in order to curb access to these weapons by criminals, juveniles and other "high risk" individuals. I will continue to support legislation which curbs such accessibility to
firearms while preserving the Second Amendment rights of gun owners; I will not, however,
support legislation that calls for the confiscation of guns, and I support the right of law-abiding
citizens to own guns for sport and self-protection.

We must also focus on investigation and prosecution of those violating gun laws. I am a
cosponser of Effective National Firearms Objectives for Responsible Commonsense
Enforcement (ENFORCE) The ENFORCE Act authorizes funding for 500 new Alcohol,
Tobacco, and Firearms agents and more than 1,000 federal, state, and local gun prosecutors,
improve gun tracing and ballistics testing systems that aid in the identification of gun crimes, fund
smart gun technologies research, and close loopholes which hinder the enforcement of gun laws.
I also voted for H.R. 4501, Project Exile: The Safe Streets and Neighborhoods Act of 2000,
which establishes a grant program that provides incentives for States to enact mandatory
minimum sentences for certain firearms offenses. The bill passed 358-60; it awaits Senate
consideration.

Thank you for informing me of your interest in this issue.

Sincerely,

"I believe that the Second Amendment to the Constitution does not in any case guarantee a
right that is absolute, but one that can be limited by reasonable requirements."

So, Connie, what is the Second Amendment version of "yelling 'fire' in a theater," which was Justice Holmes' idea of "reasonable" limits on free speech in the First Amendment?

"I support federal controls on firearms in order to curb access to these weapons by criminals, juveniles and other "high risk" individuals."

Uh, Connie, these are "criminals, juveniles and other 'high risk' individuals"; THEY DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO CONTROLS, federal or otherwise.

"I will continue to support legislation which curbs such accessibility to
firearms while preserving the Second Amendment rights of gun owners"

This is a nonsequiter, an oxymoron, a paradox, and a whole bunch of other words that describe two states that cannot exist in the same time and space. In a word, it's simpleminded.

"I will not, however, support legislation that calls for the confiscation of guns, and I support the right of law-abiding
citizens to own guns for sport and self-protection."

Perhaps not. You'll just make it that much easier for Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, et al., to do so. No, thank you.

I'm done.
