A last minute plea

This is directed to those of you who plan to vote third party. I understand your concerns,
understand your frustrations with the Republican party. Matter of fact, you guys have in less than one year brought me around to the "extremist" attitude I hold now that is borne out by my signature. But I ask you: how will you feel if, on Wednesday morning, the headlines read "Gore Wins?" Can there be any doubt that HCI will take that win as a "mandate" for their agenda? Or that the rate of acceleration for their agenda will be as rapid as it has been during the Clinton years? Who, Gore or Bush, will put new gun control measures on the front burner once in office?

Gore dropped gun control as a centerpiece of his campaign because it was apparent that it was a losing issue. Who made it a losing issue? We did. Along with the independent union guys and the hunters who saw Gore for what he really is.

This election may come down to less than 1% of the popular vote.

I firmly believe that Bush can be pushed toward respecting and preserving the Second, assuming that he does not already hold strict contructionist views on the Constitution as he has already espoused. Why? Because he hasn't backed down on his tax
cut proposals, even though "polls" showed they didn't sell with the soccer moms. He never apologized for Texas CCW. He never apologized for executing murderers. And, when confronted by a DUI story, he didn't hide behind Lanny Davis. He told the truth, something we haven't seen in eight years.

I know there are people here on TFL who are ready to "go to the mattresses" on RKBA. I also know that most of those tough guys will fall asleep on the mattresses and never fire a shot.

We can have rapid dissolution of our rights, or we can work over a president that already seems to be leaning in our favor. Four years is an eternity in politics. Look at how much we have lost in just eight years.

If you must, use both hands to "hold your nose" and vote for GW. I don't find that stance necessary, but that's just my gut instinct. But please, in the name of all that is right, do not allow Al Gore to be elected.
If you're itching to commit "suicide by cop," please do so at a post office. Don't do it at the polling station.

Please.

Dick

Interesting take. While I sympathize with Bush, I live in Texas, where I may freely vote for Harry Browne and not worry about Bush losing. Maybe we ought to engage in vote swapping like the liberals. My wife can vote for Browne, and one of you folks in the "swing" states can vote for Bush knowing Browne got an endorsement without losing Bush an election.
While I fear the enevitability of blood shed that will be brought on by a Gore appointment, I am not so fearful that I will compromise my principles. Bush will be better than Gore, and if it was Cheney/Bush, I would not hesitate to lend my support. I just cannot lend support to someone who wishes my son to be eighteen prior to legally owning any guns I may want to give him. If he must be eighteen to be armed, how likely is it that if a big war broke out, they would say that 17 was fine to possess government arms? I don't buy either party line. I welcome the chance to wake early in the morning and cast my ballot in the polling place convieniently accross the street. I will cast it for the man who most represents the guiding principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I will not hurt Al Gore because he doesn't have a hope in Hell of winning TX. I will not hurt W, because he has overwhelming support in Texas even amongst Democrats. I will once again leave the booth feeling good that in front of overwhelming pressure to do otherwise, I will cast a vote for my conscience, and in so doing do my part to ensure that the tens of thousands of little white crosses in places all over the globe weren't erected in vain. I will vote for Harry Browne to honor my Uncle Walt who is buried in the American Cemetary at Naples Italy. :D

Kjm, what about states like NY and much of New England, where Gore will win by a large margin? Of course Bush will win in TX. Why not give him every vote he needs even in states like TX? It's not just a matter of winning the electoral votes in every state, it's about winning nationally. Harry Browne has no chance of winning, and you ARE taking a vote away from Bush. Don't complain when Gore is elected, and you need to be licensed and eventually registered to own a gun. Maybe the liberal press is exaggerating the momentum of the democrats right now, but this should motivate us gun owners to vote for one candidate only. A vote for Browne is a vote for Gore and you know it.

Might I suggest a compromise: vote for Cheney/Bush for President and choose Libertarian condidates from local offices. The two-way split has pretty much removed the LP from any consideration for presidency but they are fielding very strong candidates for the House and Senate.

Oleg's right and that's what I did today. Come on, Libertarians, let's get out the vote for BUSH. Vote Lib on races the Lib's can win, and support BUSH so we can get the garbage out of the white house!

Sorry, but I plugged W... And since I'm in St. Louis, where tonzo folks are voting for a ghost, I sorta felt obliged to plug in my preference for Ashcroft - he is at least in one piece... (that plane hit HARD). And I'll vote for anyone who is running against Gephardt and has even the slightest chance... And since we need a pro-CCW governor, I voted Republican for Talent, who I voted against the last time (hey, it wasn't so bad - his Democrat opponent's name was Ross...).

Huh? What are you talking about?

Except for Maine and Nebraska, all states are winner take all. The president is elected based on electoral college votes, not the popular vote. Gore will get all of the electoral college votes in Massachusetts, whether he wins by 1,000,000 votes or by 999,999. Doesn't matter, he still gets all the electoral college votes from MA and Bush gets 0. So I could have safely voted for Harry Browne. I didn't; I voted for Bush. But I could have voted for Browne and it would have made no difference on the outcome of the election.

The popular vote doesn't count. The only thing that counts in the presidential race is the number of electoral college votes.
