I am considering getting a rifle for metallic siluette, long range and target shooting.
My budget is 10,000.00 NOK = 1,711.74 USD so used rifles and rifle/scope kits is considered.

The rifles that seems to fit:

Steyr SSG 69 .243 Winchester ( used )
Remnington Model 700™ SPS™ 7mm-08 ( no scope )
Savage Axis XP 7mm-08,3-9x40mm Scope included
Savage hunter 11 FCNS 7MM-08 REM ( no scope included )
Savage edge .243 Win 3-9x40 Bushnell
Howa 1500 .243 win HGR62107+ includes Nikko Stirling Nighteater 3-10x42 Scope, Rings & One-Piece Base
Howa 1500 7mm-08 HWR66704+ includes Nikko Stirling Nighteater 3-10x42 Scope, Rings & One-Piece Base
Howa 1500 Ranchland Compact HGR36707B+ includes Nikko Stirling Nighteater 3-10x42 Scope, Rings & One-Piece Base

The Howas have a flexible fore-end that is prone to get in contact with the barrel if its shot from a sandbag.
No Rem 700 rifle/scope packages available here in Norway at this time.

So, what kind of opinions do you folks have about the rifles i have listed ?

The Savages have a reputation for being very accurate guns out of the box but at a reasonable price. When I was considering a bolt gun, the Savage models consistently came out as being the best value for the money.

The Savage hunter 11 FCNS also comes with the Accustock and Accutrigger which will save you on buying a rifle and then having to upgrade it to gt btter accuracy from it.

I have a Howa 1500 in 30-06. I could make it touch if I would forcefully squeeze the OverMolded stock and barrel together, but it doesn't touch from firing it off a sandbag.

...

I've never shot factory ammo from the Howa but with my handloads it shoots .3moa when the scope mounts and rings are undamaged. :/
The stock aluminum rings got stripped from the screw, which I replaced 6 or so months ago. Then I recently slipped in the snow and fell on the scope and damaged the stock aluminum mounts, (2 piece.)
Hopefully it will be back to shooting well when I get the mounts replaced with steel.

Hi. Depends on what you call long range and the kind of target shooting you plan on doing.
Neither the .243 or 7mm-08 are long range target cartridges. Both of 'em drop like bricks past 300 yards(274 meters).
The rifles are hunting rifles. Any of 'em will do, but target rifles they ain't.
"...$1,711.74 USD..." More than enough for a good, heavy barreled, rifle here or Stateside. Most of us don't have a clue about prices in Norway.

I agree with Wild Alaska if the Styer is in your budget that would be my first choice. Howa would be my second, and the Savage 11 third. The Axis/Edge wouldn't make it on the list.

While I don't agree with Wild on never buy a Savage. I feel that Savage makes a decent rifle for light duty hunting and target shooting. If I made a living guiding in Alaska/Africa I probably wouldn't take the Savage either as my choice of firearm.

I totally disagree as well about the .243 Win about not being a target rifle. If your twist rate will allow you to stabalize the 105 grain target bullets you have a target rifle that will run with all the other match rifles. There are plenty of bullets out there that have the BC to compete in the 6mm/.243 as a target rifle.

Since you are talking about a Silhouette rifle, that pretty much eliminates the 243 because it will have a hard time taking out pigs or rams. 30-06 or 7-08 will handle them just fine.

As for the make of the rifle, Steyr SSG (since you are in Europe), Rem 700, or Howa 1500, in that order. I am not really a fan of the Steyrs because of the press-fit barrels (makes me feel uneasy), but they have an outstanding reputation so I cannot say I would not trust one. Howas are amazingly accurate, and Remingtons are a good all-around rifle.

The 7mm-08 should not kick to bad, since i am recoil sensitive ( everybody is that, in some degree, more or less) and its my first rifle.

It has a flatter trajectory than the .308 Win. and .30-06 Springfield at similar bullet weights because the slightly smaller-diameter 7mm bullet generally has a better ballistic coefficient (BC), and is thus less affected by drag and crosswind while in flight.

The 7mm-08, with appropriate loads, meets the required standard for moose hunting in Sweden, Finland, and Norway. Such loads allow it, for that purpose, to be compared favourably with the 6.5x55, 7x57, 7x57R, 300 Savage, 303 British, and some 308 Win. and 270 Win. loads; they have killed many moose.

I know somebody that hand-loads, and have done so in many years.
I can also get the barrel threaded for a suppressor, a suppressor tames recoil very well.

The best suppressor available here in Norway is A-Tec's maxim.
The data is:
weight: .450 gram ( 15.87 oz )
Dia: 44,40 mm (17.32 inches)
Total lenght: 235 mm (9.25 inches )
It is made from aluminium with steel baffels
It adds 155 mm (6.10 inches) to the barrel length
suppression: 32,2 DBC

The 7mm-08 was developed specifically for the metallic silhouette game. It is fine for long range shooting as well.

Recoil will be on par with a 308 Winchester.

Of the rifles listed the Savages will be the easiest to modify yourself if you so choose. I would list Howa as my second choice, but it may be your first choice if you do not plan to modify your rifle in the future.

The 243 Win will be on the light side for metallic silhouette shooting, even with 105 and 115 gr heavy for caliber bullets. You will want 140 grain or heavier projectiles to ensure the ram falls down consistently when you hit it.

So a Savage or a Howa, see if you can't handle a few examples of each and see what fits your body best.

Visaman,

Just out of idle curiosity, what is the price of a Howa SubMOA rifle in 308? And how would it compare to a Savage 10FP in 308? And how do they compare in prices to the Tikka T3 Tactical?

I only bring it up because when you consider the 308 Winchester you get a lot more options for long range shooting from factory offerings. The 308 will have a bit more recoil than the 7mm-08 but not significantly more, and there is a TON of premium ammunition offered from factories and handloading data galore.

Of the three rifles listed, the T3 Tactical is probably the best factory option for what you want, detachable magazines and built in scope rail. Tikka's are very affordable here in the US, but I don't know about Norway.

Anyways, good luck finding the rifle that fits you best.

Save your money for the SSG69 or SSG04. Go check out the bolt on the SSG04 and compare that to the others. Incredible stuff.
