A heck of a time for Mauser questions

I just traded for a Mauser-type rifle in EXCELLENT condition. I know this is a heck of a time for questions, but I know very little about the gun. Please help.

It is supposedly a Yugo '98. It's chambered in 8mm. It was imported by Cole Distribution. Came with cleaning kit, bayonet, and sling. Totally jam packed with Cosmoline. Great condition as I said. Top of the reciever has some kind of coat of arms with "M 48 A" stamped just under it. The side of the receiver has some funky lettering followed by "44" stamped slightly deeper than the commie looking writing that precedes it.

I would take a picture of it but it's dark right now and my digital camera is a POS. Maybe some pics tomorrow. So, what do I have here?

Thanks.....Callahan

It is my understanding that the Germans occupied Yugo during WWII and placed some of their arms manufacturing equipment there. After it got so 'hot' in the 'vaterland', they went home to defend 'her' and left the equipment there. The Yugo's kept making the German K98 'clone' on the old German machinery with folks trained by the Germans. So---the Yugo M48 is indeed a Mauser 98 which is a close copy or 'clone' of the German K98. I have one also-also from Cole's. I do not believe it has ever been fired. It is as new! Beautiful gun.

I also believe that the M48 has a slightly shorter action than the regular K98 from Germany or the other 'regular' Mauser 98's. No big deal as they are still large ring 98's-it is just that the bolts, floorplates, etc will not interchange.

Perhaps there are those more knolegable than I that can correct any of my errors and add more info.

Enjoy the rifle. Good gun, interesting history.

While I'm waiting for some expert opinions, I'll share my plans for this little jewel. Since the piece is apparently unissued, the bore is in perfect shape. I'm not going to rebarrel it. I'd like to get a synthetic stock and make a "scout" rifle out of it. Timmney trigger, forward mounted scope, etc.

My question here is...... Where do I go for scope mounts that don't require drilling/tapping the reciever and bending the bolt handle? I'd like to mount it well forward as I said. I've wanted a scout rifle ever since Mr Cooper started howling about them.

Main thing.......No grinding. No Dremel tools. No permanent mods.

Thanks.....Callahan

BTW, the 'Produze 44' or some such spelling is simply a code identifying the 'factory' in which the work was done.

They also 'rebuilt' German K98's (some at the same factory) and are now being sold as surplus. Some of them are also quite nice guns.

I have two of these and agree that they are nice rifles. It sounds like yours is an M48A. I understand that the main difference between these and an M48 is that the "A" version has a stamped rather than milled floorplate. Not a big deal.

I also have a German K98 that was reconditioned in Yugoslavia (Nazi marks removed, Yugo crest stamped on receiver). It is similar, but different from my M48s. As was mentioned, the M48s have slightly shorter actions. Also, the M48's wood handguards cover the barrel both behind and in front of the rear sight. The K98 handguard doesn't cover behind the rear sight.

Finally, regarding the scope mount, I think you want the scout mount that attaches to the rear sight base. I've thought of getting one of these myself. I don't think they require any permanent change to the rifle.

I'm certainly not a Mauser expert, and am happy to be corrected if I've given incorrect info, but this is my understanding. Have fun.

I think Mitchel's Mausers sells a scope, rings and mount set for the M48 series, that mounts on the orig. rear sight mount. They may do stocks too. Let us know how it turns out, since I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Good luck!

Unfortunately, there are no aftermarket stocks available for the Yugo 48. At least, there aren't any that I'm aware of. You'll have to stick with the stock you've got.

Thanks for all the info. That "Swampy" page shows EXACTLY what I have here. I guess I should have researched first, because I paid a little too much for this one.

I looked thru Brownells some last night. Its a shame that none of these stocks will fit. Will the Timmney trigger fit?

Thanks......Callahan

Inspector,

Here's a thread or two that might interest you:

B-Square apparently makes a scope mount (# 18563) that attaches without any additional drilling, tapping, etc. Look here:

For stocks, go here and click on Mausers:

I know there are more threads over on the Mauser board that deal with "sporterizing" a Yugo, but I didn't have time to track them down. Try a search for "stock" or "sporterize".

WOW!! Thanks for the links. There is a literal WEALTH of info at that C & R forum. I've learned much already. :D Among the things I've learned is that I, sadly, paid WAY too much.

I downloaded the Mitchell owners manual and took the rifle apart. Cleaned it up real good and shot it with Winchester factory ammo. I'm going to stay away from the corrosive stuff and get some Lee Collet dies. I have a bag of virgin brass on "hold" down at the gunshop and have some bullets on the way. This rifle is not only a KEEPER, it's just the beginning of my newfound Mauser habit. :)

Inspector, I don't think there's any reason to avoid the old corrosive ammo. I shoot ancient Turkish stuff quite a bit. The only thing I do different is a quick couple of swabs of the bore with some ammonia-based window cleaner before I pack up the gun to head home from the range. I just keep a little bottle of the stuff in my shooting box (cheap yellow plastic tool box).

Then, I clean it the usual way when I get home. No hurry on that, since the corrosive salts are removed.

For cheap plinking, the old stuff is just fine. It just may not shoot as consistent as your own loaded rounds.

Regards.
