A good youth rifle...

I am looking for a youth, single shot, bolt action,.22LR, rifle of good quality. Do any of you guys have any experience with any. I am going to introduce my 8 and 6 year old boys to the fun but responsible world of the shooting sports and also enroll them into the Junior NRA. I have looked at the Chipmunk and the Marlin, but that is it. Any suggestions for a "First Rifle"?

Only one I have any exp. with is the "Crickett" it's got a 16 inch barrel and only an 11 1/2" length of pull so it's the right size for the little ones. Bolt action single shot, fires short, long + long rifle. What I like about it as compared to most is that it has an aperture sight which I think is a little easier to learn to use than most other types. It might be a little hard to find I've only seen one and bought it for my nephew immediatly. You can contact the manufacturer (or have your FFL do it) at 1-800-742-0455. By the way I think the CB long's are a great way to start someone out with a .22 firearm due to the extremely low noise level.

Hope this helps, Blue Duck

This might be an expensive option, and it's not a bolt-action, but the T/C Contender in Youth Carbine configuration might be a viable choice. It has the added benefit of being readily configurable to "adult" dimensions, as well as handguns of numerous barrel lengths and calibers. Just another thought... -- JFrame

For the low-cost option...I got my son a Romanian .22 trainer. Its a repeater with a 5-shot magazine, but is sized to fit him (and me) OK. Very accurate rifle. I paid $60 from a local dealer, but you can find them as low as $40 (+shipping) at http://www.gunsnammo.com

Decent trigger, decent sights, scope rail, rugged construction, free-floated barrel...I really like it.

Dave R,

Couldent agree more! And thanks for the supplier link, this company seems to be below most every-one else.
