A good deed - what say we get a gun for our BillCA?

As some of you may know, BillCA has posted about many guns he owned which were stolen in a burglary. :( As Bill is a staunch supporter of 2A rights, and a valuable member of TFL, I suggest we chip in to replace ONE of the dearly departed revolvers, as a start. I'm in for $25. Who has time to accept the money and make the purchase, and deliver our gift? Or, Bill, would could just mail the $ to you, and you report to us which one you buy with the dough, and post pics of same. Which one do you want to replace the most badly? Whaddya think?

Here is Bill's website:

http://dragon.hematite.com/gunintro.html

P.S. Bill, please remind us - what all was stolen?

Somehow I don't think the idea is legal. Straw purchase? I owe BillCA for helping me find something lately. I would if we could.

If the gun is purchased and gifted all within the borders of CA, by another CA TFLer, then such a transaction would be legal in my state, but not sure about CA, on their state laws. Or, the safe idea not bad either.

Your idea of the $$ for him to make the purchase would violate no laws. i like that one better. I'm good for it. Let us know what you work out.

What tha....

I'm pretty new around here, but I already know that Bill seems like a great guy. When did the theft happen? Just lately?

I'm in for $5

Ron

And I will make the Deros payment and handle the deal. one of the best estates locally I've seen is going up for sale at Markely's gun shop in Watsonville , Calif. (Santa Cruz county) . The prices will be Blue book for grade (which is conservative) . I helped evaluate a few and got a S&W 27 (no dash) 3.5" NIB for $400 (which was 50 less than asking) and a 90% Model 51 Remington 380 for $275. There is a : 2" 34 blue , Models 14,17,18, 15(2") and 4" , .38 HD Outdoorsman, Model 29 6.5 " (no dash) , model 52, 41, 19, 25 (acp), and a dozen more S&Ws all p&R, all 98%-100% , also a few older vintage Colt's like a 1917 us property,Colt Army Special 98% .38spl, 1908 .380, Gold cup NRA bullseye style ect. Anshutz 54 s with vintage sights and scopes ect. Their inventory of good vintage guns is up now too, some specimens remarkable! 831-722-6945 :)

Excellent

Cool. Sounds like you have a keen eye on the deals, gordo. Now we need Bill to chime in and tell us what he wants, whether a safe or a gun, and which one. Gordo, you don't have any $$-sucking habits like drugs or exotic dancers or gun-collecting, do ya? ;) Call Gordo and get his snail mail addy and send the checks to him. Or you may want to post a P.O. box address here.

Preacher Man of the High Road will vouch for my integrity.

We need to get Bill to drive the 60 miles to Markelies this weekend (address and Phone# above) to look at the S&W collection that will be going up for sale Sat. Ask for Scotty and tell him Gordon sent you. If CaBill is gunless tell him I will pay for his rental and lane time! :)

WOW!

I'm impressed you guys! And deeply touched.

While I knew this was a great bunch of folks -- friends I've never met -- I never expected anything such as this. I sincerely appreciate all of you who have said you'd donate some hard earned bucks towards a new gun. But your generous friendship means more to me than the money.

If someone would like to do something for me, I have a request that will help out a friend of mine in dire need. If anyone knows a company in the S.F. Bay Area up to Sacramento who is looking for a: Sun/Solaris/Unix system administrator, Unix email administrator, website PHP programmer, or C programmer, please drop me a line with what you know. My friend lives near Fairfield and has been out of work for over a year. You can imagine how his financial picture looks and he's afraid of losing his house. I'd appreciate any leads and "inside info" you could toss my way. If he gets a job out of it, I'll treat you both to steak dinners at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in S.F. (transportation to CA not included! :p )

Gordo - MANY thanks for the information about Markley's. I used to work in Watsonville (remember Skyway Freight?) and went there often. It's still on Blanca Ln. right? I'll have to get there early on Saturday! There's at least 3 in that list above that caught my eye! (PLEASE tell me these will be sold as consignment!)

For those interested in the theft...
The day after Labor Day, 2004, I came in and found the house ransacked. Besides some camera gear, about $200 in cash, the worst blow was in the bedroom closet. Behind the door was a Homak steel dual-gun cabinet I'd purchased in 2002 as a stop-gap until I found a safe that would hold everything. The burglar(s) apparently ransacked looking for the keys and when that didn't work, set about using a tool (likely a screwdriver) to pry the door enough that they could defeat the lock mechanism. From inside the cabinet, they took every handgun I had except one that wasn't in the cabinet. Taken were, in order of descending pain to me were;
  1. S&W Model 58 - .41 Mag M&P blue, 4" bbl with glossy uncheckered S&W wood grips.
  2. S&W Model 28 - Conversion to .45 ACP- A model 28 I converted myself to use a 6.5" 1955 Target barrel & cylinder in .45 ACP with uncheckered wood S&W grips.
  3. S&W Model 39-2 - 9mm - First handgun I ever bought. Blue slide, bare Aluminum (bead blasted) frame, Pachmayr grips. Modified w/o Mag disconnect and safety modified to leave hammer up with safety on.
  4. Colt Series 70 Government - .45 ACP, Blue, 5", extended slide/safety.
  5. S&W Model 57 - .41 Magnum, 4", blue (no pin/no recess) Pachmayr grips.
  6. Colt Mustang Plus II - .380 ACP
  7. Colt Diamondback - .38 Special 2.5" with Pachmayr grips
  8. S&W Model 65 - .357 M&P 4" Stainless
  9. Taurus 731 - .32 H&R Mag, bright stainless, 2" ported bbl.
  10. S&W Model 15 - .38 Special, 4"
  11. S&W Model 422 - .22 LR 4", blue.

Lessons learned - don't trust your guns to a simple steel cabinet. Do get a quality safe (I'm looking at a Liberty for $649 locally) and do it right. Get some kind of an alarm, even if it's just a loud screamer alarm. Fortunately, in my case, they did not break into the "large" side of the cabinet where the rifles were stored. Probably because they would be very conspicious walking around in a townhome complex.

I've started to rebuild the collection. Many of the above guns were bought with an eye on L.E. service use and personal reasons. Today, it seems that my tastes are running to CCW, "classic" S&Ws or collectible guns.

Here's some of the replacement units (few are "as good" as the originals and their history of course:) )

Clockwise from upper left: Glock 17 (the survivor), S&W M66 2.5", Springfield Champion .45 and S&W 649 .357.

I'd love to find a Colt Combat Commander .45 and a (Ltwgt) 9mm Commander sometime in the future, without taking out a 2nd mortgage.

The most recent accquisition and one of my best:

Found this collecting dust at my local dealer. S&W M57, TH,TT,RR,WO, recessed, unpinned, with unmarked blue box and a presentation case still in the original factory shipping carton. Best of all, it's an unfired 1981 gun! :D Safe queen or shooter? Hmmm.

Again, many thanks to all of you guys for your thoughtfulness.
May God Bless each of you,

Sincerely,

I like Siotwo's response - I'm in for $5 too (it's bugger all anyway), give me a PayPal address and it's done.
It's not charity - it's unity. Unity against the arseholes of the World.
As a matter of fact, I've just had a **** of a day. One of those where everything goes wrong! It finished with me locking the keys in my car - that was just an indication of how crappy my day had been. During the day my lawnmower died - no amount of pulling and tugging would get it to go. I went to the 'hole in the wall' bank to get some dough, waiting back while a dude did his thing - next thing, as I approached the machine, a fat bitch pushed in front of me - yep. When I got to it - it was out of dough! Next - I went to my local cigarette store and there was an old Gypsy woman there who was a bit short on money for her purchase. I gave her enough to make up the purchase ( hey - why not, the road is long and life is short). Then she gave me a kiss - ugh Puke - what's wrong with these people. After that I went straight home and opened a beer. I don't care what happens next, but I'm doing nothing more today.

Somehow I don't think the idea is legal. Straw purchase? I owe BillCA for helping me find something lately. I would if we could.

There is a difference between a gift and a straw purchase. A gift is just as it sounds. A straw purchase is where an individual that can legally purchase a gun does so (usually for a profit)with the knowlege that it is for someone that has some legal impediment that prohibits them from purchasing a gun, e.g. a felony conviction. Of course with any situation such as this, it would be best to seek some guidance from the BATF&E when in doubt about the legality.

A safe is the better idea though. I don't give gifts of firearms except maybe to a close family member, like a son.

I have posted an Australian $10 note. A bit slow I know but I was hoping one of our Banks would get some Yankee Dollars in. Tourists seem to use the Plastic these days (and this is a small town anyway). I did mention that if your US Bank won't accept the Aus$ I'd send Steve Irwin to see them (he lives down the road from my place) and he'd be carrying a self - loading crocodile.

As of today- $40. He hasn't told me if he found anything at Markely's . Hey Bill ;did you buy something there? I'll pay the DEROS fees and you have $40 so far. :)
