A Genuine Hand Cannon

Hard Ball

New member
Recently picked up a Smith & Wesson model 29 with a 10&5/8 inch barrel with the adjsuable four position front sight. This is a real hand cannon.
However, when I took it home and showed it to my wife she said "Hard Ball. they didn't give you all the parts. Where are the wheels and the trails?'

I'm envious Hard Ball. I've been looking for one of the Silhouette models for awhile to complete my collection of model 29's. Now Smith has came out with the model 629 Extreme with a 12" barrel. *sigh* Chances are I'll never have one of those due to the agreement unless some day I find one used.

Congradulations on a great gun and a wife with a sense of humor. :D

Yessir - damnfine gun ideed, that model. i have the 629 'Classic' stainless and its fun as all 44's are. Now for hand cannon i can recoomend that you graduate to 454 Casull. Recoil is all in the mind anyway: you don't feel or care about it or... you got to be out of your mind to shoot them danged things. Great for 'Siluetas' and one uses the Elmer Kieth ( I think) technique of 'walking the shots up to the target' - but the 44 at least allows you to keep at it a little longer before one starts to give a funny kind of cramped handshake with a wince to go along with it. That front sight is a boon. Some opinions to the contrary, its not really necessary to haul it around behind a Jeep :) (one gets weird looks from the cops if you do)

What a cool gun for siluetas!! Not ideal for IWB carry, though. I second the 454 for even more (...maybe too much) of a good thing. In my friend's beautifully made 7 1/2" ported FA revolver it doesn't quick that much ...but don't try to shoot more than 40-50 full power rounds in one seating.

You are right. I am fond of both of them. I still remember the first time we went shooting shortly after we were married. After trying several handguns she announced "I hope you can get another Combat Magnum. Hard Ball, because this one is mine!"

HAND CANNONS RIGHT.

Try one of JD Jones 375JDS (TC Contender) or a 47-70 if you want power and a little pain.

About eight years ago I sent a 44 mag. TC Contender barrel to Jones shop and had it rechambered to 444 Marlin. What a fun gun???? After 10 rounds you know you've been shooting and your hand and wrist is starting to hurt and after 20 your ready to call it a day.

I father-in-law used the 444 in GA a few years back to take down a wild pig. That 265gr. Horandy took it right down.

I think I'll have to go along with what Elchimango said that 44 Mag. will give you more range time. I'll even drop down a few calibers to the 41 Mag.

You all have a good day.

Hand cannon = that darned 2.5 inch .454 Casull I just HAD to try out a while back. (Someone had one at a range, and with a grin, stated anyone who wanted to could give her a whirl.) For the benefit of anyone else similarly tempted, trust me on this one, DONT. ;)

I have a 6.5 inch magnaported S&W which shoots like a dream. I love it.

I believe that this is the ultimate hand cannon. A BFR in 45-70. Ouch!
