Out at NAS Lemoore, (My home away from home) today my squadron needed to ferry in a couple of birds for routine maintenance and appealed for volunteers to go and rescue the planes, a common practice with Reserve Squadrons. So I volunteered.
Upon returning to Lemoore we taxied up to the transient line and shut down and a Marine Sgt. (temporary plane Captain) came over to assume the aircraft. We exchanged the customary chitchat a pilot must relay to the P/C about the flight, known problems etc… When I noticed something barely visible, sticking out of his right BDU pant pocket (very odd for these boys),
“Marine, what is that in your pocket”? I asked.
“Sir, It is a bumpersticker for an automobile, Sir”! He replied very crisp.
I thought I recognized it, it was Blue with alittle bit of white showing.
“May I see it”? I asked
“Yes sir”! He said and produced a BUSH/CHENEY Bumpersticker. I couldn’t help but smile.
By this time my squadron mate and pilot of the of the other F/A-18 had made his way over to us and made the comment,
“You gonna put it on your plane”?
So we did, sorta. We propped against the forward windscreen of the F/A-18. But against the flat black glareshield it stood out like Ralph Nader at a Libertarian Rally. Someone went for a camera so as we waited around for the shutterbug to return our Squadron X.O. shows up and sees the “object”…
He began to roar about base this and base that and demanded to know whose bumpersticker it was.
The Marine was in the motion of opening his mouth to own up to it when I (almost in a yell, to cover any noise he might make), announced it was mine.
X.O. came over to me and began to talk in a normal tone of voice,
“Fast Eagle”, He said, “You need to keep your bumpersticker off of government property, the glue on the back could mess up the canopy glass, keep’em off at least until the election is over”.
He then turned and walked off.
Were ready for Nov 7th 2000 at VFA-25! Along with a few thousand Marines as well!
BUSH/CHENEY 2000!
