A Friend's Remington 1100.....

A guy that i work with asked me my opinion on a problem he is having with his 1100 today. He says the problem is that the gun will not shoot anything but number 1 buck shot accurately. He swears that any other load he feeds it will not pattern at all past 20 yards. He says he purchased the gun new in 1986 and has rarely shot anything in it but number 1 buck the entire time he has owned it and the only reason he wants to now is because 00 is easier to come by. He thinks the reason it shoots poorly is because shot a slug through it once and in his opinion that messed up the barrel. I asked him what choke the barrel was and he said it has a full choke. He says the gun cycles perfectly every time he shoots it and that this is the only issue he has ever had with it.

At first i thought he was messing with me but he is very serious that the gun won't accurately shoot anything but number 1 buck. I have an 1100 and hate it so i was probably the worst person he could have asked but i figured that some of u might be able to give me / him some advice. And also help me decide if he is full of it, doesn't know what he is talking about or has a legitimate problem.

Thanks in advance.

A full choke is a little constricted for a slug, but I'm not sure why it would mess it up so anything other than a given load doesn't work.

Spare barrels for the 1100 are easy to find. I'd get one with the RemChoke threads so he could put in the right choke for the load/use.

My advice is to do what I did and sell it!!

It has a fixed choke or is he just using a full choke?
If he fired a rifled slug through it it is possible he slightly damaged the barrel by scratching it, but doubt it and certainly not enough to hurt accuracy.

Love the 1100 and its sister the 870. Among the best ever made and proven for over 50 years! Actually, I have found slugs work best in FC bbls, NOT screw-in but real FC bbls. Since he bought it in 86 he probably does not have choke tubes. Currently there are 7 1100's in my safe and several extra bbls. I have never heard of the issue he is describing and can think of nothing that makes sense. Lead will not hurt the bbl. For a few dollors he can try a different bbl. Or, borrow one to try.

Check the end of bbl for any damage ... a burr/ding interferring with wad separation ... really a stretch. Assume no bludges, cracks, etc????

Literally 1000's or rounds of all types through mine. I am stumped.

i very seriously doubt it harmed his barrel w/a slug. #1 buck is the best in my opinioin anyway. if he really wants 00 tell him to try some different brands.

You can run slugs threw a full choke barrel with out damage. It sounds like a lot of BS to me and the guy is a novice shooter. It makes no sense at all why a gun would shoot 1 buck "accurately" and not 00 buck.

00 usually does better in chokes less constrictive than Full. Depending on load and choke, best results for me have been with LM or Mod.

Also, I wonder how much testing your buddy did. Darn near every choke and barrel I've put 1 buck through has given erratic results. A couple flyers each and every time way out of the pattern.

Thanks for the suggestions. Upon further questioning today i found out that it is the only shotgun he has ever owned. He told me he needed a gun to hunt deer with and once he had the 1100 he didn't need any others. ( I guess some guys don't feel the way i do about guns) Anyway I don't think he has done much testing at all and I'm not sure he is going to he told me he wants to take it to a gunsmith and let him deal with it so i guess thats that.

Thanks anyway.
