A friend just offered me this deal...

Hey everyone, I have been going to the range lately with a good friend of mine and he was asking me about the bullet costs of reloading vs what he was paying. He shot several of my hand loaded rounds and asked me to make him some (he would pay obviously) and I declined as I currently am loading on a single stage press. I mentioned to him that I eventually wanted a progressive press once I became comfortable with hand loading as it would save significant amounts of time. Long story short, he randomly called me up today and said he would split me 50/50 on the Dillon 650 with all the accessories I would need (we shoot the same calibers (9mm, 45, 223). He said the press would belong to me solely, but his catch was that I would have to produce his ammo for him at cost of materials only. I'm tempted to take his offer as my wife will have a hay day if I dropped 1500 bucks + on a new press (we have our second baby on the way so she is hard to reason with). I could smooth over 750-800 though.
Is this a good deal for me? Or should I wait a while and try and just purchase the setup myself? Any input is appreciated.

Personally, I hate owing anybody anything..I would include a limit in the deal or you might be loading his ammo for a very long time. How much do you guys shoot?

Personally I'm into having the cash in hand as a straight deal.
Paraphrasing 1100, don't be a borrower, it's a lot cleaner. I can think of several ways you'll be in hock for a long time, if what you posted above are the terms of the deal.

We go out every week, occasionally 2 times a week. If I had to ballpark, collectively we prob shoot 2-300 rounds between the 3 calibers before switching to the good ole .22s.
I do agree on setting some type of limit on the amount I do load for him, I just have no clue on how to even come up with a fair number.

Nope.

I wouldn't touch it.

I don't shoot other people's reloads.
I don't let other people shoot my reloads.

One mistake.
One mistake is all that stands between you and the lifetime of debt that follows the civil suit. (It doesn't even have to be your friend that sues. It could be his wife, children, parents, or even siblings.)

Plus... it isn't legal to produce ammunition for profit without the appropriate Federal Firearms License. ("Working off" a debt on the press qualifies as 'profit'.)

Im with frankenmauser... i dont shoot anyone's reloads. I dont reload for anyone else... i will let my family and a few friends shoot my reloads in my guns when i am with them... but that's it. Whenever someone asks me to load for them, i tell them they should learn to reload and how quickly a basic setup will pay for itself.

^^^THIS^^^

Been reloading for 25+ years and to this day i dont shoot other peoples reloads and i dont share mine

A 650 and he buys the materials . I'd have to say that's going to be alot of ammo you'll have to crank out for him . Minimum 10k but a 650 could pump that out in a couple days if You had to .

OK I'd say no don't do it but if you do . Not only would I set a limit on the total amount . I'd set a minimum lead time as well as a max you will do at a time .

Could you image he comes over and says . Hey a bunch of my friends from work are going to go on a weekend trip shooting and I said I'll supply all the ammo . Seeing how you still owe me 6k rounds . I need you to make me 3k real quick . That's ok right , You would not even have the press if it weren't for me .

After writing that it really makes me think about all the other people he may allow to shoot his/your reloads . Scary thought . I do load for one friend and my father but neither is very much and both were worked up using there firearms for the load development . I don't think I'd be comfortable giving either of them 1k+ rounds at a time . It's usually a box of fifty here another one there . My dad has had the same two boxes of fifty each for 6 months now .

Maybe I'd do it if my dad offered or maybe with my best friend since grade school type of thing but I'd never recommend others do it .

You could try it and have the option to just buy him out if It gets crazy .

I hadn't really thought about the legalities honestly. On that alone it makes the deal a very bad one for me. For the extra 750 bucks that I have to find it is worth just patiently waiting. Maybe you guys have some advise or sales tactics I can use to get my wife on board with me buying it? lol...the cash isn't the issue, it's that my wife and I typically run a tight financial ship every month and she will simply tell me that I already have purchased a press that makes my ammo and I do not need to make duplicate purchases. On a second note...any ideas on where in Canada I can get one those bad boys?

My friend, who I have known for over 20 years, wanted me to make him some handgun ammunition. I'm like everyone else on here, no one shoots my reloads but me. Also, I have been on a rifle-shooting kick for over a year now and it doesn't look like its going to let up any time soon :D. Long story short, my pistol press now resides at his house ;)

Very bad idea and the best way to end a friendship . I load for my son and myself no one else .

If your friend needs to lower the cost of ammo HE NEEDS TO START RELOADING HIMSELF NOT YOU .

"Go 50/50 with him and show him how to load his own ammo."

If your living arraignments allow, keep the loader at your place and let the friend come there to load. Total amateurs tend to improperly care for loading equipment and supplies.

Dustyn,

You mentioned that this is a good friend. I'm going to go against the crowd and say you should consider the offer. Just be sure that you guys have a good understanding of what the terms are. I would even consider owing the unit together and sharing the unit.

DON'T do it! I've seen so many of these 50/50 deals go bad on boats, cars, roto-tillers, tractors, etc. Just a good way to eventually end a friendship!

Indentured Servant : A person under contract to work(make ammo) for another person for a definite period of time, usually without pay but in exchange for paying for half of a Dillon 650 reloading machine.........I tweaked the definition a little bit, but I didn't have to change much....lol

I will jump on the wagon. Stay away from this deal as it has a high probability of going south in so many ways. Tell your buddy your wife nixed the deal.
