A few turkish mauser questions.

Hi everyone,

I just got a turk mauser 38 today so I have a few questions,

For one,
Is there some kind of trick to getting the cleaning rod out, that thing is STUCK?
For two,
The bayonet that came with the gun does not seem to fit around the bbl, could it be the wrong one?
For three,
I was lucky enough to find one with a decent bore, shooting corrosive surplus how can I keep it that way? Do I have to clean it right away, or is there some kind of solution I can put in there to hold it over until I get home.

Thanks, Jeff

I have a couple of these and enjoy them. The cleaning rod should unscrew (turn counter clockwise). It may well be stuck in place with dried grease and/or a little rust. The bayonet probably doesn't fit or go with the rifle - many of these (including one of mine) were shipped with non-Mauser bayonets. I think they just threw whatever old bayonets they had into the boxes with these rifles (seems like false advertising to say they come with a bayonet, but at the prices these sell for, we can't complain too much when it doesn't fit the rifle). Regarding use of corrosive ammo, I don't think you have to worry too much if you don't get to clean it for a few hours. I try not to let them go overnight. I'm sure others can shed more light on this - I'm not really sure how long these can typically go before rust develops - probably depends somewhat on the climate.

If the cleaning rod won't unscrew, try some Liquid Wrench. You're not gonna use the thing anyway - it's too short and you'll just ding up your muzzle crown - though you do need to unscrew it to fully disassemble the rifle.

For cleaning up after shooting corrosive ammo, water will neutralize the corrosive salts. I remove the bolt, take my bore guide and insert it, then stuff a length of surgical tubing into the end of the bore guide. Then a funnel goes on the open end of the tubing and with the the muzzle pointing down the bathtub drain I pour boiling hot water into the funnel.

Then punch the bore with a few dry patches to get the water out and let the residual heat from the boiling water dry her out. Clean according to regular procedures, oil generously and store.

Happy Mausering.

Semper fi,
Bruegger out.

Ok thanks Doug and Bruegger I got the rod out and I slightly modified the bayonet so it would fit not like I need it but it looks cool.

jeff,

For cleaning up after corrosive ammo, I use a solution of 50% ammonia and 50% water with a bit of dish washing liquid in it. Just swab the bore when your done shooting at the range, dry patch it, then a patch with oil. I do the regular cleaning when I get home. I have never had a problem with corrosion using this method. I just keep the "juice" in an old dishwashing liquid bottle in my range box.
