I just got a Polish M/N 44 carbine from a friend,it is semi bubbaed the bayonet lug has been cut offand a muzzle brake is spot wlded to the barrel the rear sight has been removed and in its place is a 4X scope in a scout mount
I have several M/N 91/30s and I know what they can and can't do but I have never had a mdl 44 until now.I have heard all the stories what I am looking for is some straight talk on what I can expect from this thing-Iam thinking about using it as my truck gun-range,accuracy,recoil ,muzzle blast ect
thanks

cutting off the bayonet lug is a smart thing to do, in my opinion, unless you are planning on engaging in human wave attack warfare in the near future.
I think it would be an ideal truck gun. I would think about putting some kind of recoil pad on it. The kick on these things is pretty noticeable. It's not that it's such a whiz-bang cartridge, it's about like a 30-06, but have you ever fired a 30-06 in a gun that has a stock like a 2X4? Adding a recoil pad should help quite a bit. I bought one of the Chinese ones that was designed for the Mosins, but it feels like it's made out of plastic instead of rubber. I never even put it on to try it. If you are only shooting one or two shots at a time, you might not need one, depending on your tolerance for "thumping".
Accuracy can be astonishing. Mine is a Romanian (I think) from 1954, and it looked like it was unfired. It shoots the S&B 180gr stuff into 1" or so groups at 50yds, and a couple inches at 100...with open sights. I'm in the process of putting a scope on mine just to see what it is truly capable of. My well-over-40-eyesight prevents me from realizing its true potential.
Muzzle blast? Same as a short barrel .308. As far as power, I'm sure it would drop anything in the NA continent, just like the 30-06.
They aren't as smooth as some of the other mil-surp rifles, but they give up nothing in the accuracy and power department.

Thanks!

I have heard all the horror stories about the model 44s,they will break your shoulder-can't shoot them in dry grass(flame thrower)-you would be more accurate throwing the gun rather than shooting it ect, ect, ect
The guy who gave me the gun claims he can hit Gal.milk jugs out to 200 yards(most of the time) with mil-surplus ammo.I run across coyotes, lots of feral cats and ground hogs and I figure at a 100 yards this should do the job thanks for the info

This is one of the targets I saved. S&B 180gr softpoint at 50yds with open sights... typical of this rifle. And I'm not the best in the world with open sights. I think it will serve you well, as long as the bore is in good shape.
