A few .22 questions

I am looking into a bolt action .22lr. I am currently looking into the savage mkII and the cz455 with the mannlicher stock. How do these two stack up against eachother? And what bulk ammo do you use if you have one of these?

i think youll find the cz is a better made gun im almost all respects. Accuracy wise the cz is probably going to be on average slightly better as well. I have a couple savages and like them (except for the cheap floorplate and the cheap magazines). For ammo, youre just going to have to shoot them and see. I keep a box or 2 of about 20 different lr ammos on hand to test whenever i get a new rimfire. Cant speak for the cz, but so far my savage prefers greentag cci. altho i have more testing to do.

My CZ really likes Wolf Match Target.

I have the Savage Mk II GXP which I believe is the entry level. It Is an awesome bolt action wood stocked combo pack from Dick's sporting goods, mine came w/ a bushnell Rimfire " sharpshooter" 3-9x40mm. Apparently now they Wnt ado the 3-9,-: and ONLY will use a fixed 4x. Regardless th rifle is so amazing and its the entry level Mk II. IT Cosfs $199 and I asks If I could have thensale price , no problem !

I can only imagine the better omes. This one is THE bob,b,

If you are going to shoot only bulk ammo, buy the cheaper of the two because I believe that shooting cheap bulk ammo is going to be the factor that limits the rifle's full capability anyway.
Even a great shooting rifle can't overcome the variations in velocity, concentricity and bullet density that come in a box of bulk ammo.
With decent ammo, you probably would find that either rifle could be a real shooter. If you are going to try for accuracy and attempt to see what the rifle really can do you'll need to test different ammos and probably gravitate to match ammos.

Even then, there are no guarantees and your success may depend upon the individual rifle as manufactured. I have seen CZs that are very special and are incredibly accurate. I have also had first hand experience with one of the new CZ455s that was just not up to CZ's normal standards. I doubt it will ever shoot really well.

The Savage also has some great examples of good shooters but they too have an occasional MkII that is not up to snuff.

My CZ-455 is awesome

I shoot at an indoor rimfire range where a bunch of goddam teenagers with Anschutz rifles and leather gear come in for a team shoot. I bust out my CZ-455 and...well, they kick my ass. It's unbelievable what they can do.

But when I put it all together, I can sometimes do what they do all the time: get two rounds through the teeny-tiny 50' A17 bullseye. Those Annies aren't what I consider a sporting rifle, whereas I'd take my CZ into the woods if I wanted.

Based on the posts, both those rifles are great. I had a 1990s vintage CZ 452 which was very accurate and the iron sights were outstanding. You may also want to consider a Marlin rimfire bolt action. They are very accurate and a great bargain.

The Remington 550-1 is a semi, albeit a great one the OP said he was looking at a bolt, specifically the savage mkII and the cz455 with the mannlicher stock.

Just today my brother picked up a Savage and I bought a CZ 452. Both in varmint. I'll let you know as we both been arguing about which one is more accurate. 2 of my sons have CZ scouts and they are very accurate. The CZ has a definitely better feel to me (a little more solid). The savage is about $100 cheaper. At this point I don't think you can go wrong with either.

The scouts shoot Blazers very well.

I Think the Varment 452 22lr. is the best 22 I ever shot. Can not go wrong with a CZ . As far as ammo find what brand shoots best in your rifle, and stick with that. CZ's are very accurate 22s. Hard to beat. You picked the winner.

The CZ will likely be very accurate, all of the ones I have shot were very accurate and look very nice. The Savage will likely also be fairly accurate but look like a fence post.
Why wouldn't the CZ be a better gun , it's twice the price of the Savage ?
If "cheap" were the requirement, we would all shoot Hi-Points or Jennings. Remember, only accurate rifles are interesting. And in deference to Col. Townsend Whelen, I believe a rifle should look good, too. And Savages don't.

Old rifles are neat and have a lot of nostalgia about them. If you look at the prices on some of those old classic Remington 22 bolt action rifles, you will see that you can buy the CZ for the same or less.

I am a rifle newbie who likes the CZ's but do they still have only 10 round mags?
Are there no high capacity mags for the CZs.

From personal exeperience, they are both fine firearms. I've handles both, the CZ feels slightly better quality wise, they go completely all out in the making of their guns. When we start talking .22's, a CZ becomes impractical, as neither will really perform any better than the other, that's the unfortunate truth (almost). Overall, the CZ will probably do slightly better, but not so much better where I would want to pay double the price. If it were up to me, I would go with a standard Mark II F. Hope that helped, and good luck!
