A dumb question about 1911 mags

This is stupid but I have to ask. I don't have a vast knowledge about 1911s.
For example, a Springfield 1911 full size comes with a 7rd mag. Can an 8rd mag fit in the gun and still sit flush with the grip?
The answer is probably yes but why don't they give 8rdrs with the gun instead of the 7?

Exactly my choice when I buy mags for my future 1911. So far I don't know which brand of 1911s to buy. I'm *trying* to stay well under $600.

I`d recomend the Kimber custom or royal they are in that price range .They are excellent guns , I have a Gold match that is extremely accurate. Also the Para is a good buy on thier base models if you like the idea of high cap guns.

I haven't really done any research yet but I'll keep those in mind. I'm looking something with a high-ride beaver tail and crisp and light trigger from the factory. Also Novak rear sight.

Sure they will fit, but I have always heard the 7 rounders are a little bit more reliable than the 8 rounders. You can't beat Wilson magazines, theres none better. I am a LEO and when I carry a 1911 on duty, it has a Wilson mag in it with two spares in the mag pouch. I prefer Colt 1911s, for the past 89 years, 1911 has meant Colt. If you want a copy get one of the many clones on the market today. I've got a bud with a Kimber and he's sent it back twice and it still won't play. They tell him the problem is that he needs to use Kimber mags. I say BS, if it won't work with a Wilson it won't work. The non Kimber mags are causing the slide stop to ease out to the left and it ties the gun up on the last round. They replaced the slide stop and sent it back twice but it still won't play. You pays your money and you takes your chances. Whats that saying about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery...7th

I notice the kudos for the Wilson 8-round mag. Has anybody had problmes with the McCormick version?

FWIW, I've never had a problem with my home-made 8-round mags (modified Colt factory), except it only works with a base pad.

Look for the Springfield loaded. The gun comes with front and rear cocking serations, novak rear sights, highride beaver tail and a pretty nice trigger from the factory for right around $550.

Why 7 rounders?
Because thats what the gun was designed for.
That the Original Concept. 8 rounders are an aftermarket option. As mentioned, Wilsons are very good - probably the best.

Back to the Ol' 1911 magazine question again. Perhaps it should be a FORUM of its own. ;)

I have a 1911A1 that just will not work with Wilson magazines, I works all the time with Shooting Stars, USG, Randall, and my two new Pro-Mags. The best magazines I have are the 7 round stainless RANDALLs, they have worked well in every 1911 I have tried them in.

I use a combination of 8 round Mec-Gars, Shooting Stars, and Wilson 47Ds in my Kimbers and my new project Charles Daly. I have never expereienced any mag problems in a combined 5500 rounds...And, I always load all 8 rounds!

The discussion is endless because the combinations are endless. The key is that we are dealing with three factors, gun, ammo and magazine. The makers of each try to produce a product that will work with all possible combinations of the other products. The odds are high and chances of complete success are slim.

First decide on the ammo you want to use, then find the mag that handles that type reliably. But don't expect it to handle all other types with equal reliability. (In a .45ACP, GI ball is the lowest common denominator. A gun/mag combination that won't work with that is simply not worth considering.)
