Supreme Court backs gun control law
WebPosted Thu Jun 15 16:23:18 2000
OTTAWA - Canada's highest court has upheld the federal gun control law.
In a unanimous decision, the court said the federal government has the right to protect public safety.
Members of the gun lobby reacted immediately. They say they'll file other court cases based on individual rights guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The Firearms Act, or Bill C-68, requires gun owners to be licensed by the end of this year and to register all firearms by the end of 2002. There are seven million guns in the country. Only 1.6 million are registered.
"Guns...are also used for crime and suicide, and cause accidental death and injury," the court said in its decision. "All guns are capable of killing and maiming. It follows that all guns are a threat to public safety. As such, their control falls within the criminal law power."
Alberta, backed by five provinces and two territories, had launched a challenge to the bill. They said it encroached on provincial jurisdiction.
Alberta's justice minister, Dave Hancock, says this is a "bad" law but he's encouraging gun owners in his province to abide by it.
The gun registry has been set up to keep track of the millions of guns in the country. It is expected to cost about $125 million in the first five years.
Police and women's groups applaud the decision.
"Rifles and guns are the guns ...most often used to kill," said Wendy Cukier of the Coalition for Gun Control. "Licensing and registration is critical to keeping guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves and to controlling the illegal gun trade."
Justice Minister Anne McLellan is expected to make changes to the law to make it easier for gun owners to register. She'll cut the $45 licence fee to $10 and she'll streamline the registration form to one page.[/quote]
I’m sorry to hear that this is happening in your country, west.
I only hope that we’ll have the time and motivated people to keep it from happening here.
Is the civil disobedience still an ongoing thing for all of you? I had heard about a plan for TONS of gun owners planning to turn themselves in after the deadline and clog the court system.
