A couple Re-finish jobs

I got tired of the ugly cheap feeling tru-oil finish i used on my traditions kentucky. I stipped it down and used 7 coats of birchwood casey rusty walnut and currently am up to 8 coats of Antique formula original oil finish. I am still deciding on how many coats to use before i like the finish.
Her pet load is 110gr 3f goex, .015 patch and a home cast .490 round ball.

The other rifle is a CVA Hawken .54cal It originally had a dark orange color finish, didnt look to bad but it had some battle wounds and i wanted to play around with it. This rifle first had 2 coats of BC rusty walnut applied then 3 coats of a mixture of rustywalnut / minwax American walnut and then 3 coats of regual BC walnut. I only have 3 coats of Antique formula original oil finish on it now, i am applying one coat per day to let it slowly suck up the oil.
Beautiful beech wood this rifle has.

Those rifles look great! I revived an old canadian Ross .303 from WW1 with my grandfather a couple of years ago. Its not BP but haha oh well wish I had some pics. Very nice job

Very nice. I hope you don't mind a well intentioned suggestion. I don't mean to be critical, but while you're at it, make a wood spacer to replace that brass one between the forestock and the buttstock on the Kentucky. I think it would help a lot.

Are those little holes or bumps in the Kentucky flinter's finish?
Will they come off by rubbing with #0000 steel wool or does stock filler need to be used to fill them?
Does using stock filler ruin the grain?
What caused the line of dark spots around the outline of the buttplate?

I think you're right, small water droplets.
But there's also dark spots around the buttplate.
Maybe they're pores in the wood that could have been filled in, which then absorbed some extra oil/stain.
Otherwise the contrast between the light and dark spots creates a great marbling effect!

there are tiny holes in the butt of the stock, i need to new new brass pins.

And yes there are some rain drops on the stock here and there.

Heres the factory finish kentucky, i wanted to dress it up a little to i bought a bunch of pins and did the stock.

Man that factory finish looked like crap :barf: Ive always pictured the kentucky rifle being dark and i think i finally got the rifle the way i wanted it.

It just occurred to me about them being tack holes too.
It must have first been transmitted to me telepathically!
Don't blame me 'cause I'm just a liitttle bit slow! :D

Some more pics. I added 4 coats of gun stock wax to the Hawken and to the kentucky and rub it in hard. The outcome was amazing!! Waiting on good weather to take some new pics with the wax on the stock.
