I put about 80 slugs through my gun the other night at the range. I like it alot. Was wondering a couple of things,

Ive got lots of cleaning supplies, but am having trouble getting rid of plastic build up in the barrel. The 14inch barrel comes off no problem, and access isnt an issue, but was worried about moving up to something harsher than Hoppes gun solvent as Its parkerized finish. Any ideas on this one? I was shooting Federal LE 2 3/4 rifled slugs all night. The other question was where to go for online shopping for a tactical flashlight that wont cost a fortune? Mine is a police 870 clone, so somethign for that? thanks for any help, the catalogues ive been looking though everything is way over priced.

I know of no bore solvent that can harm a parkerized finish.

Among bore cleaners that will quickly remove plastic residue are:
Brownell's Shotgun Wad Solvent
Remington Bore Cleaner
JB Bore Paste

Most bore cleaners will remove the plastic if you let it soak longer and scrub with a bronze bore brush, or one of the Tornado spiral stainless steel brushes.

All these are available from Brownell's Gunsmith Supply.

In extreme cases of leading or plastic build-up, you can wrap steel wool around a used bronze bore brush and chuck the rod in a drill.
Spin the brush at a medium speed, and keep it moving up and down the bore.

This is a non-harmful technique for OCCASIONAL cleaning of problem build-up.

Pay particular attention to the chamber.
Plastic also builds up there, and it's not unusual to see a shiny shotgun bore with a rusted, pitted chamber.
Many people never really pay attention to the chamber, and plastic shells burn all the lube off, leaving bare metal that will rust if neglected.

hey thanks for reply. Yeah reason I wondered was that some of my nitro cleaner ate abit of my parkerized finish on my .45. The 12 guage is a higher quality finish but was wondering. Yeah I will try those other goods, ive got it almost totally clean but theres one small lump of plastic right in the middle of the barrel which hasnt budges. I still have to redo the chamber. I bought my first bottle of breakfree lube to try, nice stuff. Used Remoil for ages.

What kind of solvent were you using that damaged you 1911's parkerized finish?

Parkerizing is TOUGH stuff, and I never heard of any commercial bore solvent that could harm it, no matter how long you let it soak.

As for the CLP Breakfree, it's still my favorite for general use.
One thing: Shake the DICKENS out of the can or bottle to thoroughly mix it. It settles.
Every time you pick the bottle up during use, shake it again to keep it mixed.

I usually drop a couple of small ball bearings or nuts in the bottle to act as a "stirrer".

the nitro bore cleaner, ill look it up..but its a common brand. Blue label came in a kit. Thanks for the bit on the breakfree..never bothered to shake mine up at all.
