My day at the SAS rally and MMM

Sorry I'm so late reporting. I had an all night drive back from Washington, followed by a normal Monday of work.

I was at the SAS rally and march yesterday. This was the only true "march" on mothers day.

I thought I would post my experiences and impressions of both events. I spent the early part of the day at the SAS rally, but around noon, I went across the street and down the mall to check out the MMM. A friend went over with me and we met up with another couple that were also from the SAS AIMM event over there in the Mom territory.

Each of us 4 from the SAS were carrying signs from our rally through the MMM. My friend and I each had a sign that said
"Crooks won't register their guns" on one side and "An armed woman is a safe woman" on the other. We carried the signs so that different messages were showing to the front and back. I can't remember what signs the other couple had, but they had small American flags on top of their signs. Other than their two American flags, I only saw one other American flag at the MMM and it was not well displayed.

When we got down to about 200 feet from the stage at the MMM, the crowd turned very mean and hateful. They were chanting "Go away NRA. How many kids did you kill today?" They were also throwing things and spitting on us. This was a marked contrast to the attitude at the SAS event. There were signs there that said "Million Moms - Good People, Bad Cause." We didn't let the heckling bother us.

The rear half of the Moms crowd was radically different from the front part. The back of the crowd pretty much disagreed with us, but was respectful of our right to disagree. Most of them had kind of a blank look on their faces. Others called us killers and booed us.

But there were a few in the back part of the Mom crowd who were asking reasonable questions and we answered and even stopped to talk to a few of them. One man wanted to know why we were against licensing, using the old car analogy, and we carried the car analogy to the fact that you don't have to have a license to buy a car, nor do you have to have a license if you only drive your car up and down your driveway, so why couldn't we also buy guns and have them on our private property without a license, just like cars? You could tell from the look on his face that he was starting to think more logically. My guess is that if we didn't convert him, we probably at least made him think a little and maybe do a little more research.

The front part of the crowd was very emotional and really kind of scary. These people don't have any concept of what the constitution means. They aren't against just the second amendment, they are against the whole package. When we got as far forward as they would let us, they were chanting "NRA go away. How many kids did you kill today."

Rosie was speaking at that time, and I think we had at least a 1/4 of the audience chanting at us and ignoring her. Then they started shoving and surrounding us and locking arms in the "human chain."

These weren't just ordinary mothers and housewives and families, these were experienced, militant protestors. It's clear that they thought that the words on our signs were too dangerous to allow us to continue. They were trying to split us up. My friend and I got separated from the other couple. I think they had some help from some "security" types getting out, we tried to press on for a while.

Finally, when it was clear that we wouldn't be allowed to the front, we turned around with a couple of press people and got out. My friend has a video from his camcorder of them pushing and shoving us at the front of our forward progress.

Some general observations about the MMM.

The MMM was like a circus. There was food and drink available everywhere. They had 3 carousels for the kids, along with a playground, pop-a-shot (the little basketball game)

The MMM had bumper stickers and professionally prepared T-Shirts in several styles, but all coordinated for a polished look.

They should have called theirs the "Million Dollar March."

The MMM only had about 60,000-75,000 people there. I've been in crowds of 250,000 people or more several times before and they weren't even close to that number. The 750,000 number being bandied about by the media is a deliberate lie.

I only saw one American flag at their entire rally, and it was held very low and almost out of site. It might have been dragging across the ground. It was on the pole that was being used to hold up one end of a large banner. There was no flag on the other end, and the banner was higher on the pole than the flag. When they held the banner low, I think the flag was dragging on the ground.

The back part of the crowd, the ones that weren't the militant, experienced protestors, were kind of walking around in a fog. Some were there for the circus atmosphere, some for the entertainment, but they moved like cattle, not like people who are passionate about their cause and inspired to action.

I asked one of the women at the MMM about the busses. Most of the charter busses were paid for by sponsors. Most of the people at the MMM didn't pay for the ride there.

The SAS opened with the pledge of allegiance. You didn't even have to turn to find a flag, wherever you were, there was a flag in front of you already. We had lots of big American flags, with a sprinkling of state flags, colonial flags, Culpepper flags.

There was even a flag that I thought was a FreeRepublic flag as discussed here last week, one white start on a blue flag. I asked about that one and found out that it was the revolutionary flag of Texas.

We had way more flags overall than the MMM.
The SAS had way more banners and signs per capita than the MMM. The MMM had more T-shirts and bumper stickers. I'm sure that we had more different designs of signs and banners overall than the MMM.

Some of our banners were obviously home made, but they were clean and to the point. It gave us the appearance of passion and caring about our cause. Anybody can stick a bumper sticker on their shirt or wear a T-shirt provided by the organizer.

SAS had people from all over the United States. We had a groups from Indiana, Michigan, Georgia, Florida, Colorado and Texas. I know there were others. When I spoke to press people over at the MMM, they were surprised I made the 11 hour drive all the way from Georgia for the SAS event.

On the way home, we followed three of the MMM charter busses. All three had exited the Interstates before we left Virginia. I think the MMM crowd was almost exclusively from Virginia, Maryland, Southern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. I doubt that many of the MMM crowd traveled more than 4 hours to get there.

I don't know how to explain this, but it almost seemed like the SAS crowd had more unique individuals than the MMM. The MMM crowd acted as one big collective. They weren't thinking for themselves. When I was over in the MMM crowd, I felt like one of the only German's who didn't want to click my heals, raise my arm and yell "Zeig Heil."

Great post, great observations. Check out my report on chicago if you want. I agree, they were well financed. Had music and hi-fi sound system. Food, drinks. Next time, I'll go better prepared...

The square blue flag with a single white star you saw was the original rebel flag.

THE BONNIE BLUE FLAG
Lyrics by Harry Macarthy (d. 1874)

We are a band of brothers
And native to the soil,
Fighting for the property
We gained by honest toil;
And when our rights were threatened,
The cry rose near and far--
"Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star!"

CHORUS: Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.

As long as the Union
Was faithful to her trust,
Like friends and like brothers
Both kind were we and just;
But now, when Northern treachery
Attempts our rights to mar,
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

First gallant South Carolina
Nobly made the stand,
Then came Alabama,
Who took her by the hand.
Next quickly Mississippi,
Georgia and Florida
All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

Ye men of valor, gather round
The banner of the right;
Texas and fair Louisiana
Join us in the fight.
Davis, our loved president,
And Stephens statesman are;
Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

And here's to old Virginia--
The Old Dominion State--
Who with the young Confederacy
At length has linked her fate;
Impelled by her example,
Now other states prepare
To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

Then cheer, boys, cheer;
Raise the joyous shout,
For Arkansas and North Carolina
Now have both gone out;
And let another rousing cheer
For Tennessee be given,
The single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag
Has grown to be eleven.--CHORUS

Then here's to our Confederacy,
Strong are we and brave;
Like patriots of old we'll fight
Our heritage to save.
And rather than submit to shame,
To die we would prefer;
So cheer for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.--CHORUS

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

From the Fact is Stranger than Fiction Department comes this little tid-bit:
The Bonnie Blue Flag of Secession now serves as the flag of Somalia.

South Carolina pre-empted Somalia. The cause was then, as it is now, resistance to central government control. Some stood on their hind legs and fought for states rights and individual rights. " Less government and more individual responsibility " was an honorable battle cry long before it was adopted by the John Birch Society.

Interesting words, bold italics mine:

"Then they started shoving and surrounding us and locking arms in the "human chain."
These weren't just ordinary mothers and housewives and families, these were experienced, militant protestors.

We all know this was an erzatz "grassroots" movement, but the MMMs have gone the extra step to professional protestors, complete with counter-insurgency tactics.

We're not too far from the Brown Shirts now, they just have to start wearing the uniforms.
