A Comment on CFE Pistol

So I made up a few loads with CFE Pistol for my 40 S&W, 10mm, and my 9mm Luger.

The overall velocities were fine in all three.it isnt worth posting the load data because the bullets I use are from a small company with concave bases and I seat them long. But I will say I usually load 40 S&W 180 gr bullets to 1000 fps, 9 mm 124 gr bullets to 925 fps, and 10 mm 200 Grain bullets to around 1000 fps.

Anyway, I found that CFE Pistol is much more consistent at higher pressure. In all 3 cartridges the extreme spread and standard deviation in velocities dropped as I increased the powder charge.... Substantially actually.

For instance, in my 40 S&W , with 5.9 grains I had an extreme spread of 55 fps and standard deviation of almost 26 fps (avg. Velocity around 950 fps). But at 6.4 graines the extreme spread was 18 fps and standard deviation of approx 7fps. (Avg velocity 1010 fps).

It was similar in 9mm and 10 mm auto. Which makes me think CFE Pistol may not be a very good powder for 45 ACP or it may not be a very good powder to try and download for soft target loads.

Anyone else have any experience with this powder?

CFE Pistol is my primary powder for 9mm. I have found it to be very consistent with the sweet spot for the bullets I am loading to be at 1113 fps. I also find that it is very accurate in 9mm.

45 - not so much. I still prefer Unique and Universal.

Cfe is close to unique imho, both work great in 44mag at near max loadings. Im looking forward to trying it in 40sw. 45acp coild be interesting too.

. I would have guessed it to be a 9,40,45 max pressure loading. How is accuracy?

The accuracy was adequate for my purposes. I'm not a competitive pistol shooter. I am competitive shooting rifle shooting F-CLASS 1k and 600 yards. But with my pistol loads I'm just trying to stay sharp.

But to answer your question, on sand bags it shot 2.5" at 25 yards in my 40, about the same in 9mm and about 2" in my 10mm....But that's about as well as I can shoot a pistol bags or not.
