A barrel brake?

I'm looking into getting a barrel brake on my next rifle. Where, and how would you go about doing that? Can you get it on any barrel? Around how much does that usually cost? Thanks!

A muzzle brake will make the gun much louder to you. Loud enough that, over time, it will still damage your hearing through muffs.

I'm curious enough to ask stupid questions:
What is your next rifle going to be, if you are already planning on braking it before you buy it?
(someone had to make that pun... but the question is serious)

If your hearing protection is up to snuff... This is a non-issue... I wear muffs with foam ear plugs... A braked .340 Weatherby is loud.. But its not going to hurt my hearing with muffs or with muffs and plugs..

It may not help the hearing of the poor people on the benches on either side of me.. But they get fair warning before one of the cannons gets lit off..

Yea, my 7mm rem mag with a break is loud enough I do make it a point not to shoot while others are beside me. Stay like 2 or 3 benches away minimum. Don't think I will put one on another rifle, as I don't plan on anything .338 or larger. Kinda like my shoulders where they are.

I'm planning on getting at LEAST a 300 win mag, as far as caliber. I want to get a remington 700, and figured if I'm shooting it a lot, I'll appreciate a brake.

I think I sat next to you once, .300 Weatherby Mag. Now I wear plugs AND muffs whenever I look at guns and ammo magazine....

Well, bjones870, if you're going for the big iron, I can see the use for a brake. You might want to try just wearing a jacket and padded shirt (and a pad) once or twice first. 200-500 saved would buy quite a few more of those big bore bullets. (Yes, I know, they're really called "cartridges." I just liked the alliteration).

Happy thumping!

I had a brake put on a .300Wby I had. Tamed the recoil but created a concussion wave that was unreal. Had a screw in adapter for hunting situations too, when I remembered it. As I got older and realized that the standard catridges were adequate for anything I get to hunt and it was just stupid to shoot something that big, expensive and loud, I got smart and sold it.

Today I shoot a .243, 7mm08, 308, 30'06 and sometimes a 7mmMag and feel comfortable with anything this continent has that I may contend with.
