9mm's Really Work

9 Makarov - stopping power ? Please it was only good shooting and luck. The effectiveness of the various 9 s has been discussed for many years . A 9mmx19 with modern HP ammo will do the job but FMJ leaves much to be desired.

Well that is some pretty bold shooting, I have to say. The assailant is still wrapped around the girl holding the knife and he looks the other way for a moment and the officer lunges forward and shoots him off the girl.

In the old days they liked the 45acp - they had C96 Mausers chambered in that round !! Unfortunately they scraped most of them .:(

So what, may I ask, are you trying to imply if anything?

Is it that a shot with a 9mm round that has been expertly placed still requires luck to stop a threat?

Or is it that you are implying that if it had been a more powerful round with more mass, like a .45 ACP, neither luck nor good shooting would be required?

Seems to me the combination of ammunition with the skill of the shooter and some other factors was sufficient to stop the threat - I see very little luck involved. As a matter of fact, I would chance (no pun intended) it to say that the only place I see where luck had much potential here would have been had the hostage taker survived. Rather, it seems luck was not on his side because the possibility of a chance event taking place was probably reduced significantly by using a well trained officer, with excellent marksmanship capabilities, who was not squeamish about getting the job done, who was apparently allowed to shoot to kill, and who waited for the right moment to do it while using equipment that was up to the task.

All the best,
Glenn B

Unlike those who just look at numbers I used 'chucks, squirrels, feral dogs etc to do my tests. I've compared 380, 9x19, 40S&W, 45acp especially in the past when there were no fancy HPs. The 380 left me distinctly unimpressed ! There was also a notable difference between the 9x19 and larger calibers .More modern 9 +P and 9+P+ were not yet available.
That's why I don't have any 380s today .It's popularity is not based on real world effectiveness !!
The Chinese officer seemed to be well trained and with a 9x19 with modern ammo it would be an appropriate weapon.

Didn't see any evidence

I watched video in full screen on a 56" TV, paused right after the first shot was fired, and didn't see anything but maybe the assailant being startled and falling backwards. If it was a shot in the head then I wouldn't see the need for her to follow up with the later shots. I think she missed, he fell back, and then those later bullets found their home.

I don't see how this proves ANYTHING! I mean... it's anecdotal, at best, and downright ludicrous at worst. We don't see which shots make what kind of contact at what point, so, who even knows if that first shot made contact! The 3 follow up shots may have been what did it.
