O.K. I came across on a good deal for 9mm Speer Gold Dot 115gr hollow point ammo. Is 115gr too light? I tend to buy 147gr for self defense and was worried the lighter 9mm loads might not have enough penetration. Thank you.

I've seen some test results showing penetration was just a bit under the "magical" 12 inches and other results where it penetrated more than 12 inches. Personally, I think it's fine. I have some, though I usually prefer the 124 gr. loads.

Nothing wrong with Gold Dot 115's. They penetrate well, so does the Winchester White Box or the SXZ 115 HP's. Great penetration and expansion with these 115's even though they are older technology, they work well.

115 and 124 were designed for handguns and they work well in my 9mms. The 147s were designed for subguns initially.

I have 115gr Gold Dot's in my Shield right now, while I personally prefer 124gr, Gold Dot's aren't always available because they sell out quick so I grabbed them. I have no qualms about keeping them loaded in the gun even if I find some 124gr. As far as not being +P, to be honest I prefer standard pressure in small carry guns anyway.

Now where is this deal?

As I write this post, SGAmmo.com has a box of 50 rounds of 9mm 115gr Gold Dot going for 23.95. If your order is 150.00+ and you don't pay sales tax, then that essentially cancels out the shipping costs. My advice is to go in on an order with someone unless you really like ordering a lot of ammo :)

115 gr GoldDot

The GoldDot bonded hollow point raised the bar the other manufacturers scrambled to get over. Let's see what the rumored GoldDot II will do to the industry. I can't wait.
