9mm Resonable High Capacity Mags

Thinking about a fullsize 9mm.

Factors:
o availability of high cap. mags
o price
o quality
o reliability

Purpose:
o plinking
o low cost shooter (compared to my 45acp and 44mag)
o nightstand duty
o shtf duty

My short list is:
o Beretta92FS(used) - good supply of used guns
(what about the Taurus ver.?)
o CZ75 - looked at them at a gun show, boy they've got alot of variations. The one with the best trigger was the SA version. The pull on the decocker ver. was horable.
o Glock17 - (I know the 19 if the FS, but the 17 ain't small)

Thanks, tjg

Here's my take on your factors and the pistols you are considering

Factors:

Availability of Hi-Cap Mags:
1. Beretta - anything the military uses will never lack for mags
2. CZ75 - lots of mags available at reasonable prices still
3. Glock a distant third - mags are rare and expensive

Price:
1. CZ-75 - Brand new will cost less than a used Glock, best bang for buck in a handgun in my opinion
2. Glock - $500-600 new but if you are willing to buy used, you can find good deals on them at prices competitive with the CZ.
3. Beretta

Quality:
3-way tie in my view - all are fine high-quality handguns, although the CZ75 is much cheaper than the other two.

Reliability:
Again, practically a tie - I'd call it Glock, CZ75, and Beretta if I had to rank them but I've never had a serious issue with any of those handguns if they were properly maintained.

No losers in the lot you've selected.
I'm partial to the Beretta but that's my opinion. Some find the grip to big, don't like the decocker etc.
As for mags, Beretta 15 rounders are everywhere. Just picked up three used but good condition at a gun show for $25 each. Plenty floating around on the Internet under $40.
FWIW, suggest you shoot all three and let the guns tell you which to buy.

what marley said....

This pistol has been in numerous military's arsenal's over the years. And BHP magazines can be had for under $20 (new). If the pistol cost is too high, you could settle for some of the clones (Argentine FM, Hungarian FEG FP9, or the Bulgarian Arcus 94.
I currently own 6 hi caps for my bhp, and think about getting more all the time. Not that I need them, but just cuz I can get them for such reasonable prices.

If you like plastic pistols, you could consider the HS2000, but it hasn't proven itself in my mind yet. I understand that beretta mags can be easily altered to fit them.

I've heard nothing but good (well almost:p) about the Berretta, but didn't fit my small hand too well.

Best of luck
Kenneth

HS2000 has been used by the croatian military / police in some form since at least 1995. You can alter taurus, beretta, or s&w high caps to fit (s&w are the cheapest). Under $300. Buy two and do a chow yun fat to amaze your friends.

Croatia?

Bastiat,

I thought officers in Croatia had the option of purchasing from an approved list, among them HS2000, CZ75, Glock 19. Isn't it as common for police to be armed with an AK47 as with a pistol? How many of the Makarovs in circulation has the HS2000 replaced? Not trying to flame, just trying to get some information.

Factors:
o availability of high cap. mags, all three that you mention
o price, Beretta, CZ and Glock way distant
o quality, Glock, Beretta, CZ
o reliability, Glock, Beretta, CZ

Purpose:
o plinking, Glock 34, CZ, Beretta
o low cost shooter (compared to my 45acp and 44mag), any 9mm
o nightstand duty, Glock, Beretta, CZ
o shtf duty, Glock, Beretta, CZ

The 17 and 34 are the full size, the 19 the compact and the 26 the subcompact

I'd say you can't go wrong with the three you mentioned. If standard capacity magazine availability and price is an important consideration, I'd drop GLOCK from the list. I'd also consider adding the Browning Hi-Power (if you can find one). I've seen a lof of magazines around at the gun shows.

I'd feel fine about any of the guns you mentioned. I'd choose the one you personally like the best.

My info came from a swat magazine review (I hear the owner is a pretty good guy ;) ). Here's a quote:

A team of engineers led by a Mr. Vukovic improved the HS 95 into the current HS 2000. Designed specifically as a military service pistol, it has been adopted by both the Croatian Armed Forces and Police. Slightly modified to allow importation into the United States, it is now available here at a very competitive price.

Don't know the breakdown by sidearm type in croatia (now there's a final jeopardy question for ya!), but from that article and what I've read from a croation poster over at hs2000talk.com, it does seem to be the issue pistol.

Inexpensive hi cap 9mm mags? A 10 round Beretta 96 mag (.40 caliber) holds 13 rounds of 9mm.

A 9 round Glock 27 mag (.40 caliber) holds 11 rounds of 9mm.

In the guns I've tinkered with, 9mm feeds reliably from .40 caliber magazines.

pinetree,

I've got all three guns (thank you TFL) and they're all winners. I'd say Beretta, then CZ, then Glock. I put the Glock last cause of the cost of mags and no single action. The Glock shines for CCW, but gives up a lot as a bedside/plinking gun. As for CZ vs Beretta, the CZs I've tried haven't had as good of a SA trigger as a Beretta (haven't tried a SA CZ).

Of course, the correct answer is whichever fits YOUR hand the best.

I like and own all three guns. It's pretty hard to beat the CZ-75B SA. I love the trigger. I had mine converted to SA and never looked back.
