9mm on a 1911 platform?

Just was curious to know if anyone besides Para Ordnance makes a 9mm handgun on the 1911 platform.

Thanks for all posts and info.

Periodically, you will see Colt & Springfield guns in 9mm. Don't know of any others. I've NEVER seen a Para in 9mm.

Para does make a 9mm, but from what I've seen it is only availble to Law Enforcement, don't know why though. They also have an 18 round mag capacity. Colt offers the 1991A1 in 9, but they seem hard to get ahold of. I've seen them advertised in Shotgun News and they also have it listed in the Blue Book of gun values.

BBBBill: ParaOrdnance calls their 9mm 1911 the P18. It has an eighteen (18) round magazine only available for law enforcement/military agencies. The gun comes with a ten round magazine.

sks: Colt's and Springfield Armory have both chambered their 1911's in 9mm. You could probably order one in 9mm through your dealer.

Here's another source-

Network Custom Guns can sell you a barrel system that will drop into any 1911. You'll need to get a mag, but I don't believe there's much else to invest in other than a 1911 platform. The accuracy can't be beat and the recoil, (not that 9mm has much to begin with), is severely reduced. No frame modifications needed and if you want a really hot 9mm, John is the specialist when it comes to 9x23. 357Magnum ballistics out of a 10shot 1911. Far less recoil than every other 1911 on the market. Won't put nearly the stress and wear on the gun and is very reliable. Hope this helps.

Equalizer,

Are you sure that a .45 ACP slid (thinking of the extractor), and ejector will work with 9mm?

I have run 9mm and .38 super interchangeably using the same slide and ejector, but think the .45 may be prone to problems.

Well those posts certainly answered some questions. I had seen the PA in 9mm but didn't know it was limited to LEO. Did see an add where it was offered along with the .40 and .45 with the coupon to get two extra hi cap mags.

Let me throw another wrench into the works. If the 9mm can be dropped into the 1911 platform, then can it be dropped into a 10mm Colt Delta Elite?

Kimber also chambers their 1911's in 9mm.

From the Kimber web site:

Custom Stainless - Available in .45 ACP, .40 S&W, 9mm and .38 Super.

Stainless Gold Match - Available in .45 ACP and .40 S&W, and by special order in both 9mm and .38 Super.

BTW, the P18 9mm is available to anybody, only the 18 round magazines are LE/Military only. Dealers don't stock them because most people aren't looking for a 9mm that size with only a 10 round magazine.

9x19,

Good question. I'd have to check on that, but I believe that he uses the same set up for 38 Super, 9x23, and 45, however the firing pin hole is lowered since the barrel is stationary and does not tilt like the recoil operated lug/lockup type that we're all familiar with. Puts the bore axis closer to the hand w/out any modifications to the frame. The firing pin is replaced to prevent primer flow in case someone uses real hot ammo. Got to shoot some 200gr'ers @ 1400fps and didn't notice any pressure signs, not even flow. Fun, surprisingly light load with only a 17 and a half pound spring!

There's not supposed to be any problems extracting or ejecting, but will ask next time I contact NCG about the details you asked about. I'd like to get a multi-caliber gun some day. Being able to shoot a 200gr bullet @ 650 or 1450 with the same light 17 & 1/2 pound recoil spring with reliability already is pretty versatile, but would like to be able to interchange with 9x23 since I already reload 9mm (cheap stuff).

Best regards,

Having never seen a Kimber in 9mm in a shop or show, I recently sent a message to them asking about the availability of 9mm models. The reply is included below:

"The demand for .45 ACP and .40 S&W has precluded our ability to make a run of 9mm for the forseeable future. Given small current demand for the 9mm, I would not be suprised to see the caliber removed from the catalog."

So you can cross Kimber of the list of possible vendors for now.

I remember seeing a picture of a scaled down single stack 1911 in 9mm; was about the size of a BHP. Do not think many were made.

Which begs the question...

Why?

First off, I'm assuming it's because somebody is either recoil sensitive, or has a large stash of 9mm, or loads exclusively for it, and needs a 1911 to shoot it all. If you want a large frame 9mm, do what Uncle Sam did and get the Beretta 92, at least then the bulk of the pistol is justified by it's high-capacity magazines. Or the Browning Hi-Power. Detonics did offer one of their shorty variants (COmbat Master?) in 9mm, maybe that's what a person means by a 9mm 1911? I'm just really curious, in this day and age of 10-round magazines, what advantage does Old Slabsides offer in 9mm Luger over his .45 ACP brother? And I'm not talking 9x21, or 9x23, or 9x25 Dillon, just the plain vanilla 9x19 Luger.

Some shooters compete in IDPA ESP with a 9mm. 1911. Makes for a good low recoil gun. A 147gr. bullet only has to travel 850 fps. to make the power floor. For those that do not reload factory 9mm can be bought for $90m.

Gewehy98, why ask why? :) Just was curious as I like the 1911 platform, ie locked and cocked and the ballistics of the 9mm and thought it would be fun to shoot. I'm not a purely 9mm fan. In fact the caliber that I have most firearms in is .45 Long Colt (3).

Why? Why do I want a Winchester Model 70 or a new Beretta .45, or a .....? :D

I own a Springfield Armory 9mm slide which I have installed on a stainless steel Essex frame and it is a very nice and reliable weapon.

I have a pre-70 Series Colt Lightweight Commander in 9x19. I bought it from Skeeter, another member of this board. I have found the pistol to be accurate and fun to shoot, although I haven't shot it much because I want to keep it nice. I don't plan to sell it and Skeeter can't have it back. ;)
