9mm hollow points

First welcome to THR. This ? Is asked all the time. Best is subjective so the answer will vary. 147s will tend to penatrate better and 124s will have a slightly larger temporary cavity. I have no way of knowing which waay I'd want to fudge without knowing the exact path the bullet will take thru the BG. The good thing is maybe only 1 out of 1000 times would it matter. I'd suggest you find one that feeds reliaably and shoots POA in your gun. The premium stuuf(IE golddots, golden sabers, ranger Ts and Fed HST) will expand more consistantly and they use less energy to expand so they penatrate as well or better than older technology JHPs.

There is no "best". Mavracer suggested a lot of good options for you. Buy a box or two of different brands and try them in your gun. Go with what feeds and shoots well.

The above post is right on. Generally the 115 gr. HP expands rapidly, and would be a good choice for home defense if you were concerned with over-penetration.

The 147 gr. does not always expand in the HP, because of the heavy wt. for caliber, but good penetration.

The 124-127 gr. gives good expansion, and penetration in the HP. I personally use Win. Ranger 127 gr. SXT HP + P +. But there are many great choices as pointed out. In my opinion this is the best choice for general SD carry.

What ever you decide don't use hardball for self-defense. It will over penetrate and has a poor record as a manstopper, but it's good for practice. There is a long history of this.

Make sure to shoot whatever you decide on to see if it will function in your gun and shoot to POI. Good Luck, Eagle

Gold Dot, Federal HST or Winchester Ranger T.

If confused, just get 124g +P Gold Dots and know that you bought good ammo.

No matter what you buy, be sure to run 100 rounds of it through your gun to make sure it works reliably. Normally I'd suggest 200-300 rounds but.....it's a Gen3 Glock. :) Give it a hundred.

The one that feeds every time IN YOUR GUN. The megatacticalsupergoldtalons are decorative if they won't feed reliably. Find what works for the gun and then work out which one has the better perfomance for your application.
IHMO most modern SD ammo is going to work pretty well at the receiving end. Sure some may be better than others on paper, but I bet Mr. Badguy isn't going to be too pleased with any of it.

I'd be willing to carry any of the current crop of premium SD rounds. Ten years ago, I'd never have said that.

They're all so good that a BG wouldn't know the difference.

Pick the one that works 100% in your gun and shoots the POI you prefer.

I think bullet weight really is more important than anything. Pick a weight that fits your application (ie, I'm not comfortable with 147 grains out of a 3" barrel). Once you decide what size of round, find which ammo works best in your gun.

I use 124 grain non+P GoldDots in my Rugers(P89 & P95). They give good expansion and are fairly accurate. Haven't tried the Hornady CD but have seen it's performance in the .380 and was impressed. Consistent, reliable feeding and function is as important as individual bullet action with any of the premium self defense ammo.

Popular 9x19mm JHP rounds...

This topic comes up a lot on gun/tactics forums....

If your use for the 9mm or 9x19mm rounds is home protection, concealed carry and/or duty, here are a few great factory loads;
the Ranger T 127gr +P+ JHP, the Ranger T bonded 124gr JHP +P, the Remington Golden Saber bonded 124gr JHP +P, the Hornady Critical Defense or the TAP loads, the Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP +P, the Corbon DPX 9mm load, the Federal EFMJ(expanding full metal jacket), the CorBon Glaser Safety Slug(best for home or office defense).

See www.SGammo.com www.ShopCorbon.com www.Cabelas.com www.NatchezSS.com .

Only use factory made, high quality 9x19mm or 9mmNATO rounds for protection/carry. No handloads or reloaded 9mm ammunition.

I load Gold Dots in my CZ75b. I used to load Golden Sabers, but I had a bad primer once. So I can't trust them anymore. Gold Dots have always worked for me.
Using ammo that is reliable, and shot placement are the important things really. Name Brand isn't always important.
You should buy several types of expanding ammo and see what you shoot best with and what functions in your gun the best. It's much better than basing a potentially life and death decision on something you read on the internet.

The "errornet" & the Internet...

The last member post had some valid points but I strongly disagree with part of the statement.

YES, you should buy a 9x19mm brand that works or cycles properly in your firearm. You should also get the rounds that you can afford and/or get the best marksmanship, aim, etc with.

There are many invalid & incorrect data filled posts on open forums. You should use common sense & good judgement but not ALL forum posts are wrong or worthless.
Some forum members offer useful insight that could save time, hassles or a lot of $$$. ;)
As gun-writer/author/training expert Massad Ayoob says there are many mistakes & slanted opinions on the "errornet" but don't base your 9mm ammunition choice on 1 member post.

You are 100% correct Clyde. The members on this forum for the most part are very knowledgeable and helpful. I don't mean to sound like I'm berating the wonderful people of this forum.
On the other hand, in this particular situation, I believe it's very important to thoroughly test self defense ammo in your own pistol.

i talked to an officer tonight that liked the gold dot for close quarters because they had a suicide where the man was using those in hollow points and the bullet did not exit
