9mm choices

Well, it took me 2 hours and $108, but I decided on my next 9mm.
I went to DFW gun range, rented all the usual suspects, and came to these conclusions.

I'm trying to replace a Ruger P85 MKII. I like the way it feels, but the accuracy is not to impressive. Still, it was a great first gun.

I rented a CZ75, Sig 226, Beretta 92FS, and a Glock 17.

If I was low on cash, the CZ75 is a great solution. But I'm not, and its recoil was a bit sharper than all the others, probably because of less mass. It was practically brand new, had an incredible feel, and fit and finish were actually much better than I expected. But due to felt recoil, I gotta pass. It did have great accuracy.

Glock, well, if it was for a friend, or wife with less experience than me, I'd buy it for them in a sec. It cocks my wrist at the wrong angle, and just doesnt work for me. This one fell out of the running after 2 mags through it.

So, now its down to the 226 and the 92FS

When I was in the military, My aviation unit swithced from the 38spcl to the 92f. I too had heard all the cracked slide rumors, and discounted the weapon. But it seems that I haven't heard too much actual data to back up the rumors. When I fired it in the military, I have very little handgun experience.
Now, I have alot more. After reading alot about this gun, it was second on my wish list, behind the Sig. Then I shot it. If felt great, trigger was good, accurate, and best of all, the return to battery was almost without thought. This gun just went to 1st place, and I hadn't shot the 226 yet.

I fired the 226. This is a great gun, but the trigger stuck out 1/2 inch too far for comfort in my hand (while cocked). It fires as accurate as the Beretta, but just didn't feel as good. So, I had limited myself to these 2 guns for the last half ohour of shooting, and everything I thought I'd like about the Sig, I ended up loving about the Beretta.

So, next week I'll be looking to sneak $500 out of my account w/o the wife finding out.

My new Beretta is just waiting.....

I highly recommend everyone who wants to know "Which gun should I buy" do this. It cost $100, but now I KNOW which one I want.

Everyone is different, and each had their owen preference. Renting them all and shooting them side by side will answer all your questions, it did mine.

Wish me luck with the wife.....

I am politically correct......

I'm a conservative.

While I'm not a big fan of your choice, I totally applaud your process. This is a perfect example of how to go about it, folks.

Now make sure you give us a good report on how to get that money past your better half! :D

You could do a lot worse than come down to the P226 and the 92. I have been shooting SIGs for years, but picked up a 92 this summer and am really enjoying it. If you prefer the 92 and shot it more comfortably, you not only made a great choice but also made the right choice. Enjoy.

Yes, good way to buy. I own all the guns you tried. I like them all. It's too bad a lot of folks either choose to NOT try or do not have gun rental facilities in their "neck of the woods".
Have fun with your new Beretta.
Oh, and with the 92FS hi-cap mags are fairly reasonable too. You should be able to locate plenty for less than $50/ea. I picked up two new ones at a recent gun show for $20/ea.

The Beretta was my first gun too. I wanted a hi-cap 9mm with a safety and an exposed hammer. I did a lot of rental gun firing, and my choice came down to the USP and the Beretta. I choose the Beretta because I still wasn't a huge fan of polymer frames. Anyway, it's a great gun, and you'll get many good years out of it. As Vonfatman said, hi-cap mags are cheap (don't buy anything that isn't factory), and options and holsters are plentiful. My one suggestion is to check out the stainless model. It's gorgeous!

I have a friend who had a few auto's... 45's and 9mm's... nice guns... but not "right" for him...

one day at the range, a mutual friend had a nice, but "stock" 3 screw Ruger blackhawk, in .375...

my friend picked it up, and shot it 6 times, off his knee, semi-kneeling, as the 100 yd target...

result: a group an inch and a half around, at 100 yds with a revolver and a 6" barrel...

FINAL result... he sold most of the autos, and started a Ruger collection... (a .357, a 22 cal variant, and a 45 so far...)

if you found one that fits, and works well, you almopst HAVE to get it... you CAN'T go wrong there...

At first, I was leaning toward the black gun, but I have to agree, the stainless is too beautiful.

It will be mine.
Oh yes, it will be mine.

I love my Beretta 92FS more than any other 9mm I've used. It certainly recoils less than anything else and fits my hand perfectly. In fact, I like it so much, I may get another 92 variant (and I never buy two of the same gun:eek: ), like the 92G Elite 2 or a plain old 92FS.

I recommend the stainless. The crud can be wiped off the slide and barrel without any effort, as opposed to the Brunition models. Cleaning off the breech face is a different story with either gun. The crap just will not come off without any scraping or some serious elbow grease. Also, good luck cleaning under the extractor, unless you take it out or use 3 cans of Gun Scrubber. (Sorry for the ranting, but I needded to do it.);)

The 92 is a great choice AND mags are reasonably priced. I've purchased excellent condition mags for just under $30.00 each, you have to hunt for the deals but they're out there. More typically they're priced $35-50 for used.

Try that with a Sig or Glock.

Regards and good shooting.
