So I am about to place a decent sized order for 9mm bullets. I have only been reloading about 6 months so I am still working to figure out my favorite component sources.

These are just plinking rounds not self defense or match shooting. I have loaded Xtreme 124gr Plated and RMR plated in the past in 9mm. I found Precision Delta and picked up some of their 45 ACP which shot well. I have heard lots of good things about Montana Gold but have not loaded any. I am currently looking a the following companies. All prices are shipped!

RMR comes in at about $75 a thousand for plated 124Gr flat nose. I have loaded these plated bullets before and found them to be better than Xtreme but also a little harder to seat at times. These are the lowest price per thousand. Round nose are a bit higher $81. Still coming in lower than everyone else but they are still plated bullets which is not a huge deal because I do not push pressures with my loads.

Precision Delta is next at $88 a thousand for FMJ 124gr. The main advantage I see is that these are FMJ vs plated if that matters. :eek: I have loaded their 45 ACP and them were accurate and easy to load. Seemed consistent to my newbie eyes.

Finally comes Montana Gold which if I order 3750 comes in at $93. for 124gr FMJ. I have heard nothing but positive things about these bullets. I have read that they are one of the most consistent bullets out there and that many people use them for matches.

I guess what I am considering here is a spread of about $.018 a bullet which is not really that much per round but if I shoot 20,000 this year that is about $360. Is it worth that much to go from RMR plated to Montana Gold? Is it better to split the difference and get the Precision Delta.

The other option is spread the order into 3 separate orders and experiment. I would love to hear everyones thoughts.
 
Montana Gold bullets are jacketed and not plated. All the others you mentioned are plated. So there's a bit of an apples-n-oranges thing going on here.

Now IMO, for all but the hottest 9mm rounds, plated will suit the purpose just fine. So it would follow that for your purpose, a true jacketed bullet is not necessary and thus, not worth the added expense.

From there, I think most plated bullets are fairly competitive in price and quality. Someone else may come along here and keep me honest on that one, as I have not tried every plated bullet out there.

I've used X-treme and they're good. I've also used Berry's with good results. I do like that you're going with 124's. They seem to be 9mm's native weight and is the right balance between mass and velocity. Others may have a different point of view, but I'm not a big fan of 115's. I load/shoot them now and then, but not often.

I believe I stated that the RMR are plated but the Montana Gold and Precision Delta are both jacketed. I was leaning towards RMR based on cost and usage. I might mix in a few Precision Delta FMJ as well. :D

I just ordered a good sized order of the RMR 124 Hardcore Match Flat Nose Plated bullets, I have been happy with them in my testing. I haven't tried the others but I compared them to the Hornady 125 grain HAP bullets which is my go to bullet for accuracy and they held their own. The Hornady's work out a few cents more per bullet (3000 for $385.00, $0.128 per from Wideners). I was not extremely happy with the Xtreme's in .40 cal, so I skipped them on 9mm.
 
More options. Bullet Works has good plated bullets at competitive prices. Take a look at coated bullets for even more savings. Bayou bullets,Missouri Bullets,and SNS Casting are 3 to look at for coated. I shoot a LOT,so savings add up significantly for me. I have gone 100% coated for all my shooting,whether playing or competing. And has been said before, you will not save any money-you will shoot more for the same dime.
 
You can also look at Berry's HB bullets. I like the 124gr HBFPTP bullets since they can do double duty in 357sig. The best price I have seen is $78.84 at Powder Valley, but you have to pay shipping.
 
I've gone through several thousand of the RMR 9mm bullets in a couple different weights and I've been very happy with them. Great prices fast shipping and no complaints at all.

Yeah I loaded up 500 rounds of 9mm 124gr round nose RMR today. I am leaning towards sticking with them because of the price and the fact I do not shoot hot loads.
 
I use Montana Gold and Precision Delta for both 9mm and 45ACP. I have not used RMR but I also use plated Extreme Bullets in both calibers as well.

If you are loading for plinking rounds and are not looking to push the 9mm loads then stay with RMR if you like them. Montana Gold are fantastic bullets and Precision Delta are good too but for low-pressure plinking there is no practical difference between them and good plated bullets.
 
I guess with any cartridge for which velocity is a big deal, I tend to shy away from plated projectiles. In .45 a.c.p., where velocities usually run from 750 - 950 f/s, I see no downside to using plated bullets over jacketed, if the price is right. For cartridges with nominal velocities at or above 1100 f/s, I kinda shy away from plated and stick with jacketed or hard cast lead.
 
WVsig. can you tell me why you believe the RMR to be better than extreme? i have used both and honestly couldn't tell a bit of difference. i have great accuracy from the extreme HP's, so i have been sticking with them when im too lazy to cast.

just curious what difference you saw between the two. thanks
