9mm Bullet help

Hi folks, fairly new to reloading and only do 9mm at the present time. I am having an issue however determining a load for a bullet that I have acquired from my late father-in-laws stash.

They are a Norma 116gr Soft Point Round Nose .355". Not sure what reloading data to use for these....fmj, lead round nose, etc? On the boxes he has written 5.9gr of Win 231 which seems high but he did tons of reloading back in the day, just can't find his reloading data.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum.

Because the only part that touches the barrel is gilding metal, treat them as a full metal jacketed round nose.

5.9 grains of Win 231 is well over max for that bullet.

Please consult a reloading manual or three, and visit the data on the website for the powder that you choose.

Good point. I should have caught that. "Back in the day" they didn't control burn rates as tightly as they do today, so he could have developed that load with a slow lot of powder. Today, Hodgdon puts 5.1 grains as maximum, though it is for a Gold Dot HP which is usually seated shorter than an FMJ. Sierra says 5.3 grains maximum for their 115 grain RN FMJ; 3.8 grains to start. I would use that data.

Ya, I had assumed that much powder was way too much. So using 115 gr fmj load data would be fine for these 116 gr if I am understanding correctly?
