9mm/.40 Magazines Interchangable?

Hey all,

As a resident of Canada we have ten-round magazine
limitations for all handguns. By the wording of the law, the
restriction is 'ten rounds of the calibre for which the magazine
is originally designed'. Thanks to our friends at SWAT magazine,
I see that the Taurus .40 Cal PT100 mags interchange with
the 9mm PT99, legally putting me at a 14-round capacity for
my PT99, as soon as I order some magazines.

Are there any other 9mm/.40 combos that interchange?
Beretta? Ruger? Glock?

By the way, I don't shoot .40 cal myself, so the safety issues
of putting the wrong mag in the wrong pistol (a legitimate
safety concern) doesn't apply in my case.

A couple of things occur to me.

1. 4 extra rounds seems a bit optimistic. 3 sounds more realistic.

2. If called upon to do so, how can you prove that the mags you have were intended for a .40 cal gun? Given the wording of the law, it seems like that might become an issue.

And, yes, there are other 9mm/.40 guns which can interchange mags. Some of the Ruger P series pistols will--I'll bet there are others.

My SIG P229/.40 factory magazines will hold 10 rounds of .40 or .357 SIG or 13 rounds of 9mm Parabellum. The 9mm feeds reliably from the .40/.357SIG mags; I do it all the time. The factory 9mm mags will not handle the larger rounds, but why would you want to do that anyway?

The same may apply to the (full sized) SIG P226 magazines, though I have no firsthand experience with it.

There is no interchangeability of magazines for the SIG P239; you even need separate mags for .40 and .357 SIG.

By the way, you can buy a P226 or P229 in .40 or .357 SIG and convert to the other caliber with a simple barrel change (same mags). You can also buy an aftermarket 9mm barrel from BarSto Precision and have a 3-caliber pistol. Works just fine with the factory .40/.357 mags.

Thanks for the info on the CZ and Sig. On the subject of
covering myself legally, I think I'm alright. All the Taurus mags
I own from Taurus and MecGar have markings indicating 9mm,
witness holes marked 5 and 10, so I'm sure the 40 variants have
similar markings. If they are simply blank steel hulls, I'd agree
that I may be in a legal bind, so I'll just watch my p's and q's.

Hi, Mike. I shoot IPSC with 2 Glocks, one in 40 and one in 9, and I've found that the 40 mags will hold 12 rounds of 9mm and feed and function just fine in my 9mm pistol; however, doing this in competition will get you DQ'ed. :)
