9mm 1911's-do they work?

Hello everyone. Does anyone out there have any experience with 9mm 1911's? I am thinking a 9mm Springfield would be a great shooting gun. I like the 9, and I can shoot it more comfortably than other cartridges (elbow injury). I have heard mixed reports on 1911's chambered for anything other than .45. Will single stack .38 Super magazines work?

Any help is appreciated

Thanks

I've seen them work fine.

But they are sensitive to OAL. They like LONG loads. Also, a magazine with a rear spacer to load the cartridge in the front of the magazine helps.

I have a Springfield in 9mm. It is one of my favorite pistols (but then aren't they all). I have had no reliablity problems except for those I casued. That is, I replaced the stock recoil spring (14#?) with a 16# as the slide felt kinda lazy to me. Afterwards, UMC ammo was not powerful enough to cycle the action fully to the rear and there were occasional failures to feed and the slide would not lock back on empty. Winchester white box works just fine though. It is a joy to shoot and the first round I ever fired I though was a squib because the recoil was so low. I have not yet aquired a Super or 9x23 mag but if I run across an inexensive one at a gun show I might experiment.

It's great for a plinking or competetive shooting gun. It's horrible for CCW because there are other 9mm's that are much smaller.

I've read in gun mags that 1911's in 9mm weren't as reliable as .45's, but I've owned a combat commander in 9mm for nearly 20 years and after thousands of rounds, I've never had a malfunction.

The most beautiful 1911 I've ever seen was a friend's Colt Commander 9mm which was also a dream to shoot. He's had it for years and it's one of his favorite range guns, and I think it's his only 9mm.

I have a a CD in 9mm. Only problem I had is the extractor which I replaced. I also replaced the extended slide stop with standard one. My thumb rides the stop which prevents it from opening on the last round.
