98 rebarrel job

Spadone

I have a 98 large ring action. How do I go about setting the headspace? I was thinking about getting a .308 BBL.

Spadone, with a depth micrometer measure from the face of the receiver to the primary torque shoulder and then from the face of the receiver to the face of the closed bolt. The difference in these two measurements plus .001" is the distance your go gage should protrude from the chamber. I recommend you get Kuhnhausen's book on the Mausers before trying this project. Spadone, let me add to that. With a pre-threaded, short chambered barrel, assuming the shank length is correct for your particular action do the following: Disassemble the bolt. Install the barrel. Try closing the bolt body on a go gage. It should not close. With the correct chamber reamer, an extension, and T-handle, ream the chamber just a little at a time until the bolt body will close on the go gage with a very slight feel. It should lack at least a quarter inch from closing on a no-go gage. George
