98 Mauser action screws

Where can I find allen head action screws for a 98 Mauser?
I checked Brownells Numrich & Midway, couldn't find any.

I don't know of any on the market. But you can get the 1/4' hex head blanks and thread them yourself. They are 1/4"-22tpi. Brownells sells the die SN 325-142-200 and the blanks SN 080-012-020. And this just in from the "you learn something new everyday" department. Just below the 1/4" blanks are socket head screws for the FN Mauser. The thread is the same and I would imagine the lengths to be also. SN 122-505-598. George

I don't know of any allen head screws made for the mauser action, but Brownwlls lists allen head blank head screws on page 137. You could cut it to lenth and then thread it. They are .250 in diameter. Mauser screws that I measured are .268 in diameter. The .250's might work. Take a .250 screw and thread it before buying to see if you have enough thread bite to make it work. If the head is too big you can turn it on a lathe or in an electric drill and use a file to take it down to the correct size. Allen head trigger guard screws are also listed on the same page.

Good Luck, John K

Thanks guys. I saw the ones for the FN but assumed they were different from the 98. I'll order a pair and if for some reason they don't work I could go with the blanks and have the machine shop at work finish them for me.

If you want something that can really be tightened down, I am not sure hex head is what you want. IME, they strip out faster than plain old slot heads. Torx would be the answer, but I don't know of anyone making them.

Jim: Funny you should mention the Torx ... reading this thread last night made me start looking for some stainless Torx in 5/16 or 3/8 that I could put on the lathe and make into Mauser Action Screws with an attitude ;) I think that they would be prefect.

George: Thanks for the spec ... I knew that they weren't 1/4-20's but I wasn't sure WHAT they were. I think the lathe has a 22 pitch thread setting ... but I'm sure I've never used it!
