930 SPX range report

I picked one up on Monday. It's a really cool shotgun. The "ghost loading" feature is pretty neat ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpyNoCnO4B4 ) and the fact that you can unload the magazine without cycling the action is a very nice feature.

I took it to my rifle range yesterday and ran some slugs, buckshot and a hodge podge mix of target loads through it. I didn't even bother trying to adjust the sights because shooting slugs from the bench just hurt too much. At 25 yards it would have been good enough to do the job. It shot a pretty good center mass pattern with the 00 buck.

Took it back tonight for some skeet shooting. Shot my first round with it and didn't do too badly. I think I only missed 7. It is very busy on top of the barrel with the sights and trying to pick up the bird. Not really what it's meant for anyway.

So far it has cycled every brand I have put through it. Remington and Winchester slugs, Winchester ans Eley buckshot, and numerous brands of birdshot including a few Activ shells I had laying around.

Does anybody have any links to places that have aftermarket parts for these? Has anybody done any mods to theirs that have proved to be worth it?

A couple of things you might want to check - you said you didn't try to zero with slugs, but you probably need to do that. I found buckshot would land a few pellets on target at 30 yards, but when I switched to slugs, I had to aim 2' low. It turns out Mossberg screwed the pooch with some of the early run of barrels and you really can't get a good zero out of them. I had to return the gun to the factory to get a new barrel and now everything is copacetic (6 day turn-around).
Also check to make sure yours will feed with a full magazine tube when cycled by hand. I had this issue, and I've read quite a few introwebz posts from owners who have experienced the same problem. My gun would charge just fine with 4 or fewer rounds in the tube, but loaded beyond that, nothing would happen when operating the charging handle. Mossberg is now setting these guns up with a longer, better spring which got my gun running 100%.

Regarding mods, it's a pretty solid gun out of the box. If you want to run white light or a sling, you might want to check out the Nordic Components picatinny barrel clamp; I think it's pretty slick, although it does make take-down a little more cumbersome.
Get a new charging handle - the factory unit sucks. Elite Tactical Advantage has a pretty nice one out that I picked up sometime last week - it's pretty nice. I would prefer something a little longer, but I think this will do, and at $20 it's not like you're breaking the bank to improve an already really good gun.

All in all, I think the 930 is the legit, affordable semi-auto platform we have all been waiting to come along.

Thanks for your input.

It cycles by hand just fine (except the time I short stroked it).

I need to pick some slugs up and get back to the range. At 25 yds. it was about 5 in. high and 2 in. left.

I could not find Elite Tactical systems on the web. An enlarged cocking handle was the other thing I was looking for. I like the Choate, but can only find reviews for it. All they have on their site is stocks and mag extensions. I am gonna look into the NOB, it's about half way down.

If you have any links, please send them my way.

Thanks.

So Craig isn't making the NOB anymore? I have a machinist buddy that I am mailing my factory charging handle - he is going to see what he can cook up, but we're both thinking something similar to the NOB... I wish they were available - I would have gladly opted for the Craig's product over the Elite version.

I just bought my SPX in Aug. and it came with the new charging handle from Mossberg. It's a larger round knurled handle. I finally got mine to the range this weekend and it also ran great (after I removed the Mesa Tactical sidesaddle). I called Mesa and they are sending new screws that should fix the problem.

update: Mesa tactical shell holder

I received the new larger screws from Mesa remounted the shell holder and headed to the range. The gun ran great with no problem at all.
