92fs damage

Hi, I'm new to this forum (it's actually the first one I've ever signed up on) and I was really hoping I could get some good advice, as I've been looking for a similar issue to mine for the past day and have been unable to find any. Basically I've had my beretta 92fs (purchased new in 2015) and it has been my first and only handgun. I've never had any issue with it whatsoever and I've only fired it 300-400 times since it was purchased. I took it out yesterday for the first time in about 4 months and almost immediately began getting failure to feed malfunctions a few times per magazine. After some research I figured out these were most likely symptons of an unoiled gun, as I haven't cleaned or oiled it in the time I've owned it. This prompted me to take it apart and I've noticed that the frame of the gun on the right side seems to have been cut into and I'm wondering if it's from the factory and they never did refinish it, if so it's no big deal as I only ask for the pistol to function at 100%, but I'm wondering if anyone here has seen damage to the frame like this on a 92fs and can tell me what's causing it? Thanks in advance and I apologize if this is in the wrong section.

If it's under warranty why not send it back and get it fixed. This kind of thing can be easily fixed with a dremel and polish compound to smooth it out though. Looks like factory defect or just friction from lack of oil.

Someone with more 92 experience will correct me if I'm wrong though ;)

Thanks for the fast response! I originally was going to when I saw it yesterday, but realized it was only under a 1 year warranty. I'm really just concerned over whether it'd cause performance issues/make the slide more difficult to rack?

I wouldn't be too concerned. When you oiled and cleaned the gun did it still feel as though the slide moved unimpeded? If you are worried have a local gunsmith give you his opinion. Most will look at the gun for free or almost free.

My guess is the damage shown is caused by a lack of lube. The barrel and slide will have a twisting type force on the frame because of the spinning bullet. More pics would be nice such as the slide rails of the frame.

A 9mm may not have a noticable twisting feel like a 45auto.

I've never ever heard of a gunsmith charging $100 to look at a firearm. I've had two guns fixed and several looked over by a gunsmith and never have I had a bill more than $150. I had a shotgun looked at due to some slop in the trigger. He advised me to buy a spring and even showed me how to put it on. I wasn't charged a dime. So I have no idea how you got that number.

You must be one hell of a gunsmith :p

AK95, that is not normal wear, it is not a lubrication problem either.

The part of the frame showing wear is called the dust cover, it should show little or no wear as it's not part of the rail system.

Did this just appear or have you not had the gun stripped since you owned it?
If it just appeared out of no where something is out of spec.. otherwise it's a factory defect.

I'd see what Beretta will do, I think their warranty is 2 years.. or 3 if you register (warranty card) when you bought it (iirc).

I gotta be honest though I do not hear the best stories about Beretta CS but I've never had to call them so I can't say first hand.

The wear it self is a non issue but it might be a symptom of something greater if this just started showing up.

Boy, that's the truth. Any "gunsmith", even a good one, in my neck of the woods that would have the audacity to ask that kind of money to eyeball a gun is either also a plumber (which would mean that he's probably deserving of it) or he's also a lawyer (which would mean that he thinks the title of "gunsmith" or "attorney" somehow entitles him to gouge the public of their hard-earned money).
That sort of a "gunsmith" wouldn't last long here and would mean he'd have to subsist on food stamps to maintain his weight in pork.

To add: I certainly have nothing against lawyers (one of my daughters and a son-in-law are attorneys and I'm proud of both of them) nor gunsmiths (good ones are deserving of reasonable fees); I'm only directing my criticism toward any gunsmith who would charge a hundred bucks to look at a gun. Never happen in these parts.

Is that a crack or is that just part of the frame? Looks like there's a corresponding mark on the other side.

I'm no gunsmith so I couldn't tell ya.

THIS! That is not normal wear, and it is not just from lack of lube. I would contact Beretta CS and send them that picture. Don't mention anything about lube (reason to say its your fault), but I assure you that the dust cover rail getting chewed up like that in 300-400 rounds is not from lack of lube. It is a defect somewhere that Beretta should fix.

Is there any corresponding wear on the slide, by chance?

That is not normal wear or even lack of lubrication. It looks like the gun was fired with the slide stop jammed in the UP position, causing wear on the slide. That could have been something broken, or bent, (and may have already been corrected) but the damage is certainly not normal.

Have to agree, not normal wear, and not from lack of lubrication. Here's a picture of my 92FS with well over 5000 rounds down the tube. Something on yours broke and damaged that part of the dust cover. Maybe a chip out of the locking block?

Here's an interesting tidbit that I've never bothered to try to have answered. On all four of my S&W 745s (45autos) the portion of the slide that rides on the frame nearest the damaged dust cover of the OP does not exist. In other words that portion of the slide appears to have been milled off prior to the blackening of the slide.

Any answers are welcome.

BERETTA 92F

here's my Beretta 92F purchased back around 1989

it's had 1000's of rds through it and the receiver shows no wear marks like yours?

yours looks like it's from galling from poor fit or defect in material used.
