9, .40, 357 Chrono data & my careless mistake.

I took the Glock 19 (9x19), Glock 32 (357SIG), and virtual Glock 23 (.40 barrel for G32) out last night. The G32 is new.

The first thing I did was stupid: I picked up a Glock 19 magazine (9x19) and put it in what I thought was the Glock 19. It was actually the Glock 32 (with 357SIG barrel).

I chambered a round and fired it. I first noticed something was amiss when I noticed the FTF. I ejected my mag, and noticed the case was bulged and ruptured. It was then I noticed it was the wrong caliber.

The round chrono'd at 982 fps.

Ok. For the rest of the day, I will RECHECK I the caliber printed on the barrel BEFORE shooting. These pistols are otherwise externally identical - besides the number printed on the side. Luckily, this was a low-power 9x19 round.

Anyway, here is the data, all from a 4" Glock barrel, shot from bench.

fields are: 'load: avg stddev'

9x19 DNL/PMP 115: 1062, 27.7
9x19 Proload 115+P: 1298, 10.6
9x19 Proload 124+P: 1171, 0.9 (!!!!)

.40 Proload 135: 1172, 27.5
.40 CCI/GoldDot 155: 1161, 10.7

357SIG Rem.125: 1337, 17.4
357SIG CCI/GoldDot: 1349, 12.8

Hopefully, many will learn from your mistake. Imagine someone slapping their 9x19mm mag in their 357 Sig Glock and going out for the day, only to find that they have a subsonic single shot pistol for defense when they need firepower most.

I am almost tempted to retry the same situation as an "experiment", but shoot a 9mm in the .40 barrel, just to see what would happen. If I were to do this, I would use Richard Lee's suggestion: put the gun in a jig and pull the trigger with a rope from behind a big tree.

.40 will not chamber in a 357SIG, but the opposite is not true... That is scary.

I have (inadvertently) fired 9x19 in my 41AE barrel before. Not smart or real safe, but not too terribly dangerous.
NOT recommended.

Headspace?
Accuracy?

I once got one loaded .41AE cartridge in about 2000 .40SW reloaded rounds I bought at a gun show. Luckily, it was caught when my USP didn't go all the way into battery.

I don't buy reloads anymore.
