9.3x64mm info wanted

Spectre

Staff Alumnus
I've been interested in the 9.3x64mm for a couple of years. It has energy levels a little higher than the .375 H&H, and even better than some .458 loads at 100 yards. It appears to me that this will be a great safari round, but I have some questions:

Has anyone here shot one?
Is anyone aware of any relatively economical current manufacturers? (Most of the makers I've come across who offer rifles in this caliber start over $2000.)
Would I be better served having a custom Mauser built up?
If anyone here owns or has owned one, what is or was your fodder of choice?

TIA!

I have a rifle in 9.3x74R, and this stuff is downway nasty. Wild
Boars over definitely don't like it, usually one-shot stops are the
result.

I'd recommend a custom mauser, also for the smaller brethren, although
there have been double rifles built for that caliber. I own an antique
piece made by Sauer, which works nicely, although it's stock doesn't
look quite new. Also, be prepared to replace barrels every 4000 rounds
if you want some useful accuracy. I actually prefer a double rifle
since I have two fast shots. And if boars get aggressive, a Glock 20
will probably hurt them enough to make them run.

The 9.3x64 is usually used to search after wounded animals over here,
since the usage of handguns to protect yourself when hunting is rather
rare here (the correct term for such a short-barreled rifle is
'Nachsuchenbueche' - get me the correct English translation).

One more thing - you positively have to reload. Even over here,
9.3x64R and 9.3x74R ammo ain't that abundant, so I'd get the dies, the
bullets and powders. I can't imagine how much a box of ammo that can
be had for 40 US-$ here gets any cheaper in North America.

Also, when hunting in countries where military calibers are banned,
this rifle is usually not since 9.3mm never had any military usage.

Thank you!

I appreciate your input. "Nachsuchen" means "seek", I think?

I definitely AM one of the "smaller brethren"! (5'6") ComBloc shoulder arms usually have good stocks for me. :D

I have also considered getting both 9.3x62 and 9.3x64mm, so as to have a "medium" and "heavy" in the same caliber.

Spectre: You should email 416Rigby if he doesn't chime in here on this thread. He can probably point you towards rifles.

Here in the US I think A square makes rifles in the 9.3x64 and Dakota might. You might call/email GSI [the US Steyr importer] and ask them about price for getting a 9.3x64 thru them, I know they chamber the round but don't think they list it in the US cat's. Remember the 376 Steyr uses shortened 9.3x64 brass.

I know you like 35 calibers and the 358 Norma and 358 STA are both close to the 9.3x64.

If your interested Spec I can snail mail you a copy of the loading data I have for the 9.3x64?

I was thinking of fwding this thread to you. :) By all means, fwd what you have, and thanks.

A Square does indeed make rifles in this caliber. And, well outside what I'll be able to afford for several years yet. :D Ditto, Dakota.

I actually just noticed .358 STA last night, but I don't know who makes one....

Good idea, about Steyr.

I will send you what I have on the 9.3x64 I will also send what I have on the 358 STA.

I keep looking at the 9.3x64 but keep thinking it could get to hard to feed. I like the cartridge though, think it is a better medium than the 375.

Spectre,
AFAIK, Winchester makes a mod70 in 358STA through their custom shop. Still sort of pricey (around 2400$, IIRC) but it's out there!

OMIGOD!

A cartridge we agree on, Glamdring! One of us must be slipping! :D

Thanks, Thibault. I think, for that money, I'd have my own rolled.

<edit> Waitaminute, GD! A 9.3x64mm would be my HEAVY!

I think it can be debated either way about anyone but PH's needing true heavy rifles today. Heck many PH's use 375's when backing people up on Buffalo.

IIRC the 9.3 was the smallest bore that traditionally used solids for hunting big dangerous game.

BTW the 9.3mm 286 grain bullet has same SD as 300 grain .375" bullet.
