9.3x64 Any experiances? Or the 9.3x62

I have a Model 700 in 30-06 that I keep thinking about rebarreling into a different caliber. The 9.3x64 sounds like it would be fun and unique. Any experiances with this cartridge?

<edit> The 9.3x62 sounds intersting too, so any experiances....

Good luck finding info on this one- I've been looking for several months. I'll let you know if I hear anything. This seems to me like an ideal African caliber, for places that allow one to take dangerous game with rifles less than .376.

It sounds something like a 35 Whelen. Did you ever look into one of those? 30'06 necked up to 358. It used to be factory loaded by Remington.

The 9.3x62 is more like the .35 Whelen. The x64 has a case diameter almost as big as the .375 H&H, with no belt. Spectre is right about its use in Africa; it was the destruction of German industry in WWII and the unavailability of 9.3x64 in the 40s and 50s that enabled the .375 to dominate. It's a handloader's cartridge in the US. 286 or 293 grain at about 2600 fps.

Try the forums at www.accuratereloading.com for info. There are more Europeans and Africans (a couple of which are PHs) over there.

Thanks for the info fellas...now this 9.3x62 has sparked my interest as a neat odd ball cartridge too....off to make another post...

One of my former coworkers had a 9.3x64 that his father brought back for a song in the 1950s as the German sporting arms business was getting back on its feet.

The thing thumped hard on both ends, dies, brass, ammo, and bullets were expensive and hard to find, but it shot well, and gave power right up there with the .375.

If you're looking for esoteric, I think you've found it. :)

HK's SLB2000

I have heard that HK's new rifle, the SLB2000 will be available in 9.3x64. It's supposed to have interchangeable barrels, so you can shoot 30'06 and .308 as well. I'm not sure which other barrels will be available, but you may keep your eye open. Go the the HK site and check it out. www.hecklerkoch-usa.com

You know, I remember seeing a double rifle in Cabelas' catalog. Think it was chambered in 9.3 X 74. How does that stack up in the picket fence of cartridges?

About $2000 or so, IIRC.

G,

I'm going from memory, and I'm at work and the books are at home, but the 9.3x74R is an older, rimmed cartridge that was popular for double and combination guns.

It is, I believe, less powerful than the 9.3x64, as it started out life as a black powder cartridge.

I THINK that it's in the same class as the .30-06, but I'll have to check Cartridges of the World when I get home.

It is, apparently, one of the most common cartridges found when dealing with German-made combination guns.

9.3x62 and 9.3x74 are identical ballistically, a bit more powerful than a .35 Whelen- maybe like a .35 Whelen Improved.

9.3x64 is actually a little more powerful than a .375 H&H.
