the only place i could find 8x57 mauser was cabelas. they had regular wolf ammo and a few brands of JS. whats the difference? is js safe in an m48? because that wolf ammo is dirty crap 40 rounds and the thing was rediculously dirty.

If you have a M48 it would have been made long after the change of bullet diameters from .318" to .323". It was changed over around 1905 I believe and your Mauser would have been a post WW II rifle so you will be just fine shooting any ammunition designated by JS.

They are all the same. I doubt that you will ever run into the old loading since those rifles have been out of production since 1904 or so.

This is how it went....

The 8x57 was of course a German military round. It originated in 1888 with a bullet diameter of .318" and was designated 8x57 J. In 1905 the bullet diameter was changed to .323" and the cartridge was renamed 8x57 JS or 8x57 S. The S was to denote the larger diameter bullet.

This thread brought to me by "search"

Thank you to J. chappell for clearing that up.

I hesitated to buy some JS marked 8x57 ammo recently. Now I know that it was made for my rifle.

Good info!

Just to further comment, I highly recommend NOT buying military surplus or anything Berdan primed. It's just not worth it. Stick with new production stuff. I prefer Winchester and Privi Partisian. No Wolf or Remington.
