8rd. or 7rd. .45ACP magazines

I just installed a S&A magazine well on my series 80 full size Gov't. I am wandering if I should stick with the 8rd. or go to the 7rd magazines. I am going with the Wilson magazines with polymer follower and basepad. I would appreciate any input.

I can't imagine why you would go with anything other then the 8 round mags, since it is a full size 1911. I can think of no advantage to the 7 round mags in this size pistol.

I use the Wilson 8 rounders in my carry gun. Totally reliable and have never had a problem. I have two Colt factory 8 rd mags that I put Wilson follower kits in. Again, no problems.

Since you have installed the S&A magwell, you are into the gamesman territory so will be using magazines with the extended base. These magazines are usually the 8 round type.

On my 1911, I prefer no magwell and use 7 round magazines (Mec-Gar) with the traditonal flat base. IMHO, less is more (when it comes to add-ons or modifications).

You want to the thing to run without a hitch at moment's notice. You don't know if it will until you have put 1000 rounds through the pistol without a single malfunction using your favorite load. The 7 round magazines are the conservative bet that this test will succeed.

When running the pistol at extended lengths, a little lubrication every 50 to 100 rounds is permitted and good for the pistol. Beyond that, you want the test as real-world and self-defense as possible.

I have the S&A magwell on one o my
1911s. I use Wilson 8rd mags with
BAT brass pads... but, I never load
but 7 in the mag - its not nice to
fool mother nature! :D

If you're using Wilson mags the eight rounders should be fine. On the other hand, if you're using GI style 1911 mags stick with the seven rounders. I've never found the eight round mags of this type (such as the Mcormick shooting star etc.) to be 100% reliable. John Browning designed that mag to hold seven rounds. Don't fool with a good thing.
