8mm Remington Embel Rifle

Anyone ever heard of this rifle?

Someone has offered me one on a trade. He says that it is French, 8mm and it was never issued or stamped. It only has a 4 digit number??

I would like to know more about this rifle. I did a quick search and found nothing about it. What are they worth and is it a collectible? Thanks.

Could it be Lebel instead of embel?

The reason I ask is because I used to own a French 8mm Lebel rifle,,,
I still own a French 8mm Lebel revolver.

They do not use the same ammo. ;)

What's the old joke about French military surplus guns?
"Never fired, dropped once."

.

Here are some Pictures sent to my phone.

I hope this helps.

That is a sporterized 1891 Berthier rifle, chambered for 8X50Rmm commonly called 8mm Lebel rifle cartridge (after the 1886 Lebel rifle adopted by France). A bit of trivia: the 8mm Lebel rifle cartridge was the first smokeless military rifle cartridge.

I'd say that one is worth about a $150 in the condition it is in. I know the book pic you posted says to add 300% if Remington, but it has been sporterized and appears to have had some rust pitting on the receiver. If it was all original then it would be worth collecting. I'd want to see the condition of the metal below the woodline as well.
