870P vs. 870HD

I'm planning on getting a Rem 870 SG for duty use and home security. I can get a 7 shot 870HD (#5077) for about $300, or an 870P (#4901) for about $400. While $ is not a huge issue, is it worth the extra $100 for the 870P? Both come with bead sights, so maybe I could put the extra $100 towards some decent sights. BTW, I've had several 870 Wingmasters's in the past, and reliability / durability has never been an issue. Also, is the Benelli Nova worth looking at? Benelli has a great reputation in the LE world, but I can't seem to get past the plastic (albiet metal reinforced) reciever.

870p

You can't go wrong with an 870p. Definately worth the extra. Remington has never done me dirtz, so I stand by them. The only benelli I ever considered was a m3 super 90 setup. But Thats too expensive and I just didnt think it was worth buying the Italian name.

You can throw a mag extension on that 870p for cheap. Just stay away from the wilson 1 shots.:barf:

Good thing you're not asking about a mossy.:D

I'd look into getting the #4449, actually I got the #4971, 870PMax, which is probably more than you want or need.

Yes, the extra cost over the Remington Express 870HD, gets you a Parkerized finish, non-lockable safety, metal trigger-guard, and that #4449 model comes with the ghost ring sights. You might want to add a mag extension on later.

There are also rifle-sighted versions, with or without mag extensions (look at that #4421). Be prepared, the sights will add another $100 or so. I don't know the pricing, but I'd estimate ~$500-$600 for the #4449.

Is it worth it? That's up to you, but I think it is. Adding on sights after-the-fact can be a major "p.i.t.a."...sending the gun out for installation and refinishing, hoping the installer drills holes and solders everything in the right place...

Sights, shown below, are Scattergun Tech. from Remingtonle.com's webpage.

Get the Police Model...I have both and will sell the HD model soon. The Police Model is much better and worth the extra money IMO.

1) Forget about the Nova, and

2) Spend the extra money for the 870P (no, this is NOT a plot to make you spend money 8^). Go ahead and get the version that has the type of sights you want to begin with, even if it costs a little more than the bead sighted version. You will be $$$ ahead in the long run, it is cheaper for the factory to add sights on the production line than it is for you to pay a gunsmith to do it later.

Stay safe,

870p

I second that, my 870P is parkerized and it has the blued bolt also.
It would be silly IMHO to go with the HD or even the Wilson BP model rather than the 870P.

I agree. The 870P has everything you need (like higher quality) and nothing you don't (like all this mall ninja, super tactical stuff)...for Pete's sake, it's a shotgun!
