870 Trouble

Was shooting my 870 Supermag today, was shooting slugs fine with 0 problems. Then I put in a low recoil tach buck shell. I pull the trigger...**BOOM**. I go to eject the shell from the gun....stuck, I try again...JAMED! Upon closer inspection it appred as if the hammer was stuck "up"and wouldn't let the bolt slide back. I had to manually press the hammer back into the down position. This has happened before to, what could be wrong and how could I go about correcting the problem? Thanks!

P.S. The first time this happened the flimsy bolt extension (piece of metal that connects to the standard 870 bolt on the supermag to cover the larger hole) was warped and bent. I had to order a new one from Remington. I thought it was that part that was faulty, now it seems that even without that part (as the part wasn't on this time) the gun is still jamming. Why must this 870 give me so much trouble, why?

Almost anything is fixable. I am not an expert on the 870 (or anything else for that matter) so I cannot accurately diagnose your problem.

But if this gun is a problem, trade it off on another. I bet you a buffalo nickel that your next 870 will be trouble free.

ps. If you do trade it off, please let the person know of the problem before hand. It is neither ethical nor wise to trade a problem off on somebody else.

Is this a 3 1/2 " magnum?

I for one do not like the 3 1/2 " guns. Too many additional parts to cause trouble. Sell it and get a standard 3" Mag:D

From the description, it is almost certainly a supermag. Otherwise, he could not see the hammer behind the bolt through the ejection port (the shroud is missing, as he stated). Now that I've deduced that much, I'll crap out on you. I have no idea. I don't own a supermag, and have no solid idea what could be causing that problem.

It sounds like something on the rear of the bolt, the rear of the pin, or the face of the hammer is hanging up and not allowing the bolt to push the hammer back as you work the slide. Could the hammer be caught under the firing pin (it hits it, lighting off the round, continues further forward, and then the spring pushes the pin back out, catching the top of the hammer and holding it down)? Thats a wild-assed guess, and I'm not a gunsmith, so don't pin your hopes on it (as it were, har har).

Hey, if this is the same supermag you just got from Vang, call up Hans and ask him what it could be. I'm not sure if it would be related to anything they did with the gun, but he would. If it is something they might have done improperly, he'll fix it. If it isn't, he can probably tell you exactly what it is.

Yes this is the Super mag that Hans made for me, which I waited almost a year for, which is why I can't/won't sell it. It is a great gun, but I really need to stop the jamming. Even if it ia rare, murphy's law says that it will jam when I need the gun most.

I did call Hans back when the gun broke the bolt cover. He said he would pay for the part to be refinished in NP3 at Robar. It turns out that not only did Remington give me another part for free, but Robar said they would finish it for free again...I just hope it doesn't jam again. But I havn't called Hans back because there was no need.

(Remington says the reason they don't just extend the size of the bolt is that it would add another $100-$150 to the gun... I don't really buy that, I also think that I would rather pay extra for a stronger bolt than a flimsy piece of metal.)

Anyway, I had been calling Hans alot about the gun and he was getting disscouraged. I really don't wish to bug him again unless there is no other alternative. I am really in a pickle here.

hmmmm

I think I've discovered what the problem is. There is a thing horizontal piece of metal that is along the inside wall of the reciever that you can see when you pull the chamber back. It has a hook like shape at the end of it near the stock side. I believe this is what is getting caught up on the hammer. The funny thing is, I fired around 40 round today, all functioned flawlessly in the gun. However, I loaded one round of ESTATE SWAT buckshot (same load that caused the jam last time) and the same thing happened again!!

The funny thing is though, the first day I got the gun I fired around 10 SWAT rounds with ZERO malfunctions. Why is it acting up now? Because the Super mag reciever metal piece is not attached to the bolt? I wonder if I could correct this problem, it would be a shame to abandon these shells since they pattern so tight in the gun (~6" at 30 yards and 15" at 42 yards). Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

If you can maually cock the hammer, then the hammer isn't locking up your action. The slide lock, the tab you push to unlock the slide, pivots and is held in place by the hammer pin. The slide lock is pushed down (unlocked) by the hammer spring plunger when the hammer goes foreward. If the hammer pin is loose (it should be staked on the right side), the slide lock can float to the left and not come in contact with the hammer plunger. If this happens, the gun will fire but you will not be able to rack the slide without manually pressing the slide lock. With these new plastic trigger housings, the hammer pins may not stay in place like they should. It's a quick and easy fix.

That could be it

Hmmmm, that does seem as if it could be the problem. Trouble is, I have no clue how to go about correcting it, I do not wish to damage the gun further. However, it should be noted that after I fired the shell I was unable to chamber the action, even when pressing down on the pump release. The gun was totally locked up. Even after pressing the hammer back down the gun still would not open, I even tried to dissasemble the gun while it was locked... the barrel would not seperate itself from the bolt even after taking off the mag extension. I don't even know what I did exactly to unlock the gun. It took several minutes of tinkering to somehow fix the gun.

You should not have to press the pump release after you fire the gun. Do you remember if it was already depressed or if you had to push it?
The barrel can't be removed from the receiver if the bolt is locked in battery. The locking lug in the bolt locks into a notch in the barrel extension.
If you want to call me sometime, I can walk you through a couple of things to try. My # is on my web page.

Thanks,
