I anm having trouble with my 870 super mag. It has become finiky about feeding from the mag tube. This problem is not constant but it is often. It used to be very reliable but this fall has become a problem. It looks loik there is nothing broken. In fact in looks the same as the kids 870 mag. and sugestion? If I can't fix 'er up I'll have to send 'er down the road...

Disassemble and clean the magazine tube, the spring, and the follower.
Use a big brush and solvent to scrub out the tube, then re-lubricate it and the spring lightly.

Also, field strip the gun and clean out the underside of the shell releases in the receiver.
You can use a "gun scrubber" spray to blast out the underside of the releases, let dry then spray in a good lube like Rem-Oil.

Inspect the spring for rust, kinks, or a weak spring.
Inspect the shell releases to insure they move outward under strong sporing tension and are firmly staked in place in the receiver.
DO NOT remove the shell releases. These are factory staked in place and replacement requires a special staking tool.

You were kind of vague as far as a description of the problem. Is the shell coming out of the tube ok or is it not lifting up to chamber correctly?
If it is not feeding from the tube Dfariswheel covered it well.
If it is not lifting up to chamber then you have an elevator/timing issue.
When you pull the trigger group out check the elevator mechanism. Might be something as simple as a worn pin or broken spring screwing up the timing of the elevator.

Let us know.

Just got done cleaning/instepcing and the only thing that I can see is that the rails on the slide look like they are not coming back in far enough. My son has a 3" mag 870 it looks like the rails on the slide come in about 1/4 to 3/8 inch farther than on my supermag. Did I screw up last summer when he and I had both guns apart at the same time on the same bench? This would have been the nly time that both were apart at the same time.

The shell seems to not be releasing from the tube. When it does it feeds fine into the chamber.

I Had The Same Problem With My Old 870 Once, Cleaned The Magazine Bore, Put IN A New Plunger, And Strecthed The Mag Spring And The Gun Still Ocassionally Wouldn't Let A Shell Out The Magazine. The Problem Was The Shell Release Springs. One Of Them, I Don't Know How, But Was Bent In To Far, And Not Releasing Enough. It Just Needs To Be Tweaked BACK OUT A Little, Mine Works Flawlessly Again. You Can Try To Do It In The Gun Or Have A Gunsmith Do It. Trust Me There Isn't Much To Go Wrong With The Good Old 870.
