870 Rifled Barrel Accuracy

Hi all - I have a 20 gauge Remington 870 with the factory Fully Rifled Deer barrel. I have a B-Square saddle mount and a 2-7 scope on the gun. I went to the range last weekend and at 100 yards the accuracy is more like a pattern than a group. I am using sabot slugs ( thats what the barrel is designed for ) and my group size at 100 is around 16". I couldn't get two bullets to hit any where near each other. There is a small ding at the muzzle that touches one of the lands. Could this be the source of my problem? The mount and the scope are both tight, etc. I didn't try any other ammo yet either. Any suggestions ( other than trashing the gun, etc.. ) ?????/

Ding could very well be causing the problem

Also could be that that particular gun with those particular accessories doesn't like that load.

Different load could make a lot of difference.

I'd bet on the ding bein a big factor.

I have a Rem 1187 with a Hastings 24" fully rifled barrel with cantilever mount and Leupold 2-7x "shotgun special" scope. At 100 yards my sabot slugs cut overlapping holes...one ragged hole. I call it my 12 gauge sniper rifle. I use the Winchester sabot slugs that use the lead hourglass shaped Brennke (spelling?) style slug.

Fully rifled shotguns can be picky as to ammo. That sounds a little too picky to me though.

Odds are the ding is destabilizing the slugs. Have you tried any at 25 yards to see what they are doing? Tight groups at 25 yards would make me think that the ding is the culprit.

Have you checked your scope, I.E., shot good groups with it before? If not, try putting a proven good scope on next time.

HTH!

Hi again all - Went to the range this morning; to make a long story short it was the scope. Thanks to those who responded.

The most common prob with pump guns and slugs (after "Pilot Error") is slop between the bbl and receiver. Hand tighten the mag cap as far as it goes anbd then use padded visegrips to further tighten ONE click. Bet it shrinks the groups nicely. Then, get that muzzle recrowned.

IMO,any shotgun/load combo that shoots into 6" at the max range you encounter from field positions is accurate enough.

HTH....
