870 replacement barrel help

I went to Dick's today to get an 18 inch barrel for HD for my 870 express. The ring on the bottom of the barrel however is slightly too small in diameter and won't fit over the magazine tube. My original 28 inch barrel does not have this problem. It was my understanding that all 870 parts are interchangeable. I have two questions-

1. Are parts from an 870 express interchangeable with other 870 parts?

2. The 18 inch barrel i bought is for a Remington 870 but is made by Mossberg. ( The only Remington barrels they had were rifled.) My second question is if anyone has experienced this problem with Mossberg or any other third part barrels?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

broski,

I haven't ever run into that specific problem before. It could be just a conflict in tolerances in two specific parts, I don't know. Access to a larger population of barrels would likely answer that question re. tolerances.

Another thought- Did your Express have dimples in the magazine tube? Have they been removed? If so, how?

Verify that you have a 12ga replacement barrel. Sounds like the one you got is for a 20ga.

:D Joat

I don't see any dimples on the tube. But so far as the barrel, it is def marked 12 gauge and says specifically for Remington model 870. I'm gonna get on the horn with Mossberg tomorrow. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

Nope, he bought a Mossberg made barrel that supposedly fits the Remington 870.

Mossberg basically copied Remington's barrel design for their 590 series guns, and they simply modifed it slightly and sell them as aftermarket barrels for Remington guns.

I had a Mossberg made replacement barrel for one of my 870's and it fit perfectly.

Your barrel is marked for 12 ga, but does it actually appear to be a 12 ga barrel? Will a 12 ga shell fit into the chamber of the barrel? I ask, because mistakes can be made in markings.

Another possibility would be that some assembly line monkey brazed a 20 ga barrel ring on a 12 ga barrel.

Call Mossberg..........Or return the barrel to Dick's.

Hey thanks again for the help forum. I think that the guys at the factory put the wrong ring on there, since the barrel seems to fit correctly in the receiver. Good call rantingredneck. I'll let you know once its been resolved. thanks

I have to admit, the possibility they put a 20 gauge barrel ring on a 12 gauge barrel never even occurred to me. I guess it doesn't pay to forget about Murphy, does it?

Hope you get it resolved quickly Broski. Indeed, sometimes Mr. Murphy raises his ugly head and often in manufacturing it seems to happen after 12PM on Friday or before 12PM on Monday. :D.
