870 question... (probably stupid)

i just noticed that the breech/fore-end on my 870 does not stay in the full forward position when empty and uncocked... say i fire my last shot.. eject the spend round... then slide the action forward again (making sure there is no round in the chamber) and dry fire it once in a safe direction.. the fore-end will slide down about 1" and the breech will open about 1/2" when i pick it up to carry it on my shoulder (barrel pointed up) ... is that normal? when i have a round in the chamber and it is ready to fire it stays put..

sorry if this is a stupid question.. my first pump shotgun and i have yet to shoot it much..

It is normal,, either don't dry fire it or accept the fact it will do that. Nothing wrong with your gun. My 870 and my 2 Ithaca 37's do the same

Normal.

If it bothers you, simply carry cocked and locked...without a shell in the chamber, of course.

That's to say, with the hammer cocked, chamber empty, safety on, slide forward.

This is also a sign of breaking in your gun...

It should fall a little more as you put more and more shells through it. Like everyone else said, dont dry fire or you could just cock it again and carry it cocked (after you look to see if the gun is truly empty). You can't ever be too safe.:D
